RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
We reviewed how to find the linear dimensions of all rectangles that share the same perimeter, along with the area that belongs to each rectangle. Today's lesson focused on how to identify the linear dimensions of rectangles that have equal areas. We approached these problems in the manner of identifying what information we know and what we have to solve, then solving that.
Example: What are all of the linear dimensions that equal an area of 24 cm squared.
1. Identify what you know:
I know I have an area of 24 cm squared. I know that the formula to solve area is A = L x W. I know that my area is 24 cm squared so I can input this into my formula, so 24 cm squared = L x W
2. Identify what you need to solve:
I need to solve all of the possible dimensions to equal an area of 24 cm squared. That means, I need to think of "two numbers that when multiple together equal 24". Possible linear dimensions are:
1 cm and 24 cm
2 cm and 12 cm
3 cm and 8 cm
4 cm and 6 cm
I know that I can create 4 rectangles with an area of 24 cm squared by using the four sets of dimensions above.
3. Draw a representation of each of these rectangles. Solve the perimeter for each rectangle.
We then looked at how to find the missing measurements in a figure that can be divided into smaller rectangles. This is important for when we have to solve the perimeter and area of more complex shapes. Take a look at our thinking below. We had to solve the missing measurements, the perimeter and the area (the area is a multi-step process)
How do you find the missing value in a shape? Listen to this students wonderful explanation that helped the class understand how to approach such a question
Below are some notes to help you incase you forget or get confused with the difference between area and perimeter!

Unit of Inquiry
Today we talked about how media can influence our values, perspectives, beliefs, and actions. We watched a couple advertisement videos, listed below, and then discussed the message these advertisements are trying to convey. In addition to this, we discussed how such videos can shape the beliefs and values we have when we are older. I loved hearing how some of the students were able to make connections to the techniques that the advertisers used in their ads.

Unit of Inquiry continued
During this period, we discussed the reasons why companies create advertisements and what their goals are when creating such. We went over the criteria of a successful advertisement and then students went off to create their own printed advertisement of a product that they made up. They had some great ideas for their inventions and I am excited to see how they incorporate the advertisement techniques we learned about.

Inquiry into Language
For those students who finished their OREO organizers and paragraphs last night, they got to silent read or work on any unfinished homework/corrections. I also took this time to go over those students paragraphs to give them feedback to prepare them for tomorrows OWA. For those who did not finish their paragraphs and organizers, they used this time and time in the afternoon to work on these.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
Today we learned about rectangles with equal perimeters. We began by exploring how to identify all of the rectangles that we could draw to represent a perimeter of a set value (ex. 16 cm). I provided students with a particular perimeter measurement, and they had to come up to the board to draw all of the different rectangles we could make by using different dimensions. Once we drew all of our rectangles for 16 cm, we had to solve the area of each rectangle by writing it inside the rectangles. Remember: To find perimeter, we add up all the sides (P= S + S + S + S). To find area, we multiple length x width (A= L x W).

We were able to draw two conclusions about finding rectangles with equal perimeters.
1. Rectangles can have the same perimeter, but their areas can be different
2. In a set of rectangles with the same perimeter, the rectangle that will have the largest area is the one that is a square: it's linear dimensions are the same value all the way around.

Here is one strategy to solve problems that ask you to determine the linear dimensions of all rectangles that have a perimeter of ____. Can you see the strategy?? Hint: look at the pattern that is happening to the numbers that are circled in the same colour.

Inquiry into Language
Students continued to work on their OREO organizers and paragraphs. Some of us were able to take this time to silent read. Below is the sentence structure for the students to remember when writing their persuasive paragraph.

Reading Buddies
We took some time to review the components of our "persuasive OREO". Students were each assigned a topic that they have to brainstorm ideas about to help them write a persuasive paragraph. We then had reading buddies with Ms. Gandy's grade 1 class.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math:
Last week we learned about how to calculate the area of shapes, specifically rectangles. Our homework addressed some questions that involved irregular shapes on grid paper which leads us to estimating the area of irregular shapes. We completed an example together to identify how we can solve the approximate area of such shapes.
1. First you have to mark all of your whole square inside the shape and remember this value
2. Then you have to identify all of the squares that represent 1/2 of a square and add these together. Add this value to the value of your whole squares.
3. Lastly, any part of the shape that is more than half but not yet a whole we count as 1. Those parts of the shape that are less than half, we do not count as any.
4. Add your values from steps 1, 2 and 3 together to solve the approximate area of a shape.
It is so so so important to remember that you have to include the unit of measurement squared after each measurement or else it could be misinterpreted as perimeters. We also took some time to look at examples of when you may want to calculate the area of a surface vs. the perimeter of an area in real life.
Example: The area of a ceiling to determine how many ceiling tiles you need to cover the ceiling vs. the perimeter of your house for when you are putting up fencing around your house.

Inquiry into Language:
Students began to brainstorm ideas for their topic. Since each student has a different topic, they are all challenged to think of different supporting reasons and examples. I am really excited to see these persuasive writing pieces. Some students are still finishing up their fractured fairytales.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Unit of Inquiry
Today we learned about the persuasive writing techniques: ethos, pathos and logos. We completed a reading together and went over some examples of each kind. We got to discuss how these techniques influence how the audience feels about the product being advertised or expressed. We also watched a video to demonstrate how you could incorporate each of these in a letter. Students may want to use one or some of these techniques when they have to create their own advertisements.

Day 5

Announcements
- Play Day forms due Monday
- Scholastic Book Orders due Friday
- Library Books due May 31st

Track & Field has been moved to tomorrow due to the rain today. Please ensure students come in Gym uniform again & bring a water bottle. Freezies will also be sold in the afternoon as a refresher for the students. Good luck everyone!

Inquiry into Language
Our focus for today was: how to brainstorm ideas for a persuasive paragraph & how to use the ideas we write in our graphic organizer to construct our paragraph. The topic that we discussed together was: "Should students have homework?" We discussed why sometimes, brainstorming can take longer since this is where the thinking happens! Once we have all of our ideas, all we have to do is think about how we can structure these ideas into a paragraph that makes sense, by using complete sentences and transition words. Transition words help us connect ideas, while ensuring that we are not repetitive. I am so proud of how well the class worked together when formulating our ideas, then putting these ideas into a paragraph.
We discussed the importance of where the strongest and weakest arguments/reasons go in our paragraph and why this is so. The strongest reason should go at the end as it is typically what the reader remembers most-- what they just finished reading. Our 2nd strongest reason should be the first reason we talk about as we want to make sure that we grab the readers attention and that they are engaged in what they are reading so that they keep reading. This leaves our weakest reason, which should go in-between our 2nd strongest and our strongest.
Great job Grade 3s! I can't wait to see what you guys brainstorm for your topics tomorrow!

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
Today we learned about AREA! Area is the amount of space a shape or figure covers. We specifically focused on how to find the area of rectangles and irregular shapes that can be broken down into rectangles.
- Area is expressed in square units (m, cm, and mm) The image below shows the area of 3D shapes-- we are only focusing on 2D shapes this year. The square-unit is represented by the small "2" beside each unit of measurement
-Area of a rectangle is found by multiplying the length by the width (A rectangle = L x W)
When solving the area of irregular shapes that can be divided into multiple rectangles, we have to complete two steps:
1. Find the area of each rectangle
2. Add the areas we found from each rectangle together to find the total area of the shape.

Unit of Inquiry
We reviewed how colour conveys certain messages about the product being advertised. Today we focused on what slogans & logos are, and how they're used in advertisements. We completed two short challenges on seeing how well we can identify specific logos and slogans of certain products or places we encounter on a regular basis. Most of us were able to identify all, or close to all of the logos. The slogans were a little more tricky.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Day 4

Announcements
- Play Day forms due Thursday
- Scholastic Book Orders due Friday
- Library Books due May 31st
- Track & Field tomorrow

Inquiry into Language:
The students watched some videos on The Persuasive Writing Process. Students learned about the "OREO" structure for persuasive writing, and brainstormed a variety of ideas for each section of the OREO. The topic was: Should students have homework?
Opinion: State your opinion on the topic
Reasons: Gives reasons or info to support your opinion
Examples: Give details and examples to support your reasons
Opinion: Restate your opinion with emotion

Students also looked at some of the persuasive techniques through a matching activity. They learned about:
Important people: using stars or celebrities to persuade
Urgency: when quick action is needed
Data: using numbers or evidence to support the argument
Benefits: how it will have a positive effect

Unit of Inquiry
We learned about why certain colours may be used in advertisements. Colour can impact the way we feel and view an item. Today we learned about what different colours can portray, and analyzed why advertisers may have selected those colours to represent their products.
Have you ever ordered a burger from a fast food restaurant and it looked NOTHING like the burger on their menu? We learned how some advertisements can set "unrealistic expectations" of the product we expect to receive.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Reading Buddies
We had reading buddies with Mr. Foster's class.

Inquiry into Math
Today's lesson was all about Perimeter!!
Perimeter is the total measurement around an object or figure. To solve the perimeter of an object or figure, you need to add all of its side lengths together
Ex. To find the perimeter of the rectangle above, you add 10 + 10 + 3 + 3. Depending on how many sides a figure has, that will determine how many numbers you will be adding together.
For example, if the shape has 4 sides, your formula would be: P= S + S + S + S. (S represents all of the different length measurements in that shape. If the shape had 3 sides, your formula would be P= S + S + S.
