Day 6

Announcements
Report cards went home today. Student-led conferences are next week. Please ensure that you schedule a time slot through "pickatime" if you would like to meet with me.

Our annual Spring Fundraiser is coming up! There are a lot of fun activities planned for next week. If students raise/ submit $40, they will get to go on a field trip to Scooter's Roller Palace! Spring Fundraiser due date has been extended to next Tuesday.

We will be having our in-class spelling bee competition next week to determine who will compete in this years spelling bee. Students should be practicing the words that were sent home before the march break. The Spelling Bee date has changed to Monday, April 8th.

Unit of Inquiry
We reviewed the different components of the Scientific Method to help us complete the experiment we will do on Monday. Students identified most of the components, then we walked through the experiment we will do on Monday. In their notebooks, students created a hypothesis of what they think is going to happen based on the procedure we will follow.

Inquiry into Math
We continued to create and measure angles using our protractors. We reviewed how to identify and measure specific angles in a shape. Once students completed the worksheets, they explored angles using pipe cleaners. An angles package was sent home to get more practice over the weekend.
Explaining the steps he takes to measure angles!
I love the enthusiasm for our Arts Night song and how hard we were working on our angles work! Keep up the great work!

Inquiry into Language
Students completed their final pre-OWA on writing a persuasive writing piece. Students used their dictionary skills to help them locate words they weren't sure how to spell.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
Today we learned about ANGLES. We identified the four different types of angles: acute, right angle, obtuse and straight angles. The main concept for students to understand is how to identify whether an angle is greater than or less than a right angle. Students also learned how to use a protractor to measure angles. Some steps I encourage the students to follow to help them better identify the value of the angle they are measuring since it can get confusing with the two sets of numbers on a protractor are.
1) Put your angle marker on the angle you want to measure (the curved line)
2) Identify whether the angle is greater than or less than a right angle
3) Use your protractor to measure the angle.
** If you say your angle is less then a right angle, then your measurement should be less than 90 degrees. If you say it's greater than a right angle then your measurement should be greater than 90 degrees.
When using the protractor, students understand that they should line up the centre of the bottom of their protractor (where the little hole is) where the two lines meet to form the angle. In addition to this, one of the lines that form the angle need to be lined up with the solid black like at the bottom of their protractor that meets the 90 degree line.
Video introducing the types of angles we learned about:
When identifying the angle you need to measure within a shape, you are to look at the middle letter in the question. Ex. If it asks you to find the angle of CDE, you will measure the angle of D.
Looking for angles to measure around the class using his protractor!

RECESS/ LUNCH

Unit of Inquiry
We learned all about composting today. As a class we read an article of what composting is, how it happens, how it affects soil and what we can and cannot put in compost. Students worked in partners to complete the comprehension questions that related to the reading. They are working towards answering questions in full sentences, using part of the question in their answer. Students then completed a cut-and-paste activity relating to the composting cycle.

AGENDA
- Math: angles worksheets
- UOI: composting worksheets
- Read for 25 minutes
- Spelling test tomorrow

Report cards go home Friday. Student-led conferences are next week. The website opens tomorrow at 10 a.m. to pick a time for next week.

Unit Reflections
This morning students selected the work they would like to include in their IB Binders from our UOI units. Tomorrow we will select the math work we would like to include in our IB Binders based on
- What we tried our hardest on
- What we did our best on
- What we need to improve on

Unit of Inquiry
We continued to learn about soil and the different types of nutrients soil provides plants with. We learned how they nutrients contribute to the growth of plants. We also learned about the different types of soil we have, along with the texture and structure of each type.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Reading Buddies
We had reading buddies with Mr. Foster's class today!

Inquiry into Math
Today we learned all about the difference between congruent and similar shapes. We looked at examples of what similar shapes are vs. what they are not.
Congruent shapes means that the figures are the exact same size and shape.
Similar shapes are alike based on the proportion of the shape. They need to have proportional side lengths along with the same angle. We used dot paper to help us create similar and congruent shapes.
EX: If you have two triangles who do not have proportionate side lengths or same angles, then those two shapes are not similar.
We completed some examples together on the board, then students went off to complete work independently. Once they finished their independent work, students began to explore angles on a computer game to gain some knowledge of what we will be learning tomorrow.

Student-led Conference Preparation
Students began to reflect on what they have done well/ need to improve on by filling out their student-led conference package.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Heidi Movie
We watched the movie "Heidi" with Ms. Chiappetta's class. As we watched the movie, students were asked to reflect on aspects that were similar to the class novel we read and those that were different. Once the movie was done, students began to work on their reflections discussing some similarities and differences they found. Students also had to reflect on whether they would recommend others to read the book or watch the movie and explain they choice.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Language
Students continued to work on their reflections from the movie. If finished, they began to read for 20 minutes. During this period we also began to explore how to use a dictionary. Today we focused on putting words in alphabetical order, as this will help us determine whether a word can be found on a certain page or not. We also touched on "guide words" and how we use these to help us locate words in a dictionary. We will continue to work on this as it is important that students know how to use a dictionary to help them find the meaning of words, along with help them check the spelling of words.

AGENDA
- Read for 25 minutes
- Spelling Lesson 24
- ACT OF KINDNESS
- Heidi movie reflection worksheet

Inquiry into Language:
Students had the opportunity to share about their March Break with the class. Students then began to work on Lesson 24 in their Spellers. This is a review of the past 5 lessons. There are no spelling sentences this week.

Inquiry into Language:
Students wrote a paragraph of what they did during their march break. Once this was finished, students completed a fun comic activity where they had to put some of the activities they did during the March Break into a comic strip.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
We began our Geometry Unit today with a pre-test for this unit.

Unit of Inquiry
Our new UOI is about plants and soil. We opened this unit with a read aloud of the story "Dirt" by Steve Tomecek. This story introduced us to "soil", which led us into our class readings which further talked about soil. As a class, we completed the reflection questions on what we learned about soil today. Great participation everyone!
