- Glow Zone Field Trip tomorrow

Fall Fundraiser
Our field trip to Glow Zone is happening tomorrow afternoon. Students attending the field trip are asked to come to school in their Gym uniform, and bring a small snack with them.

Orange Shirt Day
Today was Orange Shirt day. It was great to see the amount of students who participated in recognizing the experiences of the Indigenous Peoples who attended residential schools. Some of the Grade 4s put on an assembly sharing some facts about residential schools at our morning assembly.
To add to their knowledge of the experiences the Indigenous Peoples went through, students listened to a read aloud of Shin Chi's Canoe. We then discussed some wonders they still have about residential schools.

Inquiry into Math
Students completed their Whole Numbers math test this morning.

Inquiry into Language
Once students finished their Math tests, they began to work on Lesson 4 in their spelling workbooks. In addition to this, they worked on their cursive homework once spelling was finished. Students were given some extra time in the afternoon to work on these activities. Starting next week, students will be selecting novels at their reading level to read throughout the week as part of their "Reading Log".
As students were eating their snack in the afternoon, they watched a song explaining how to determine the main idea of a text. The song was quite catchy so the students wanted to dance when they watched it the for the second time.

Today was ELECTRONICS DAY and the students had so much fun playing games and watching videos of there choice. We discussed what was appropriate to do on their electronics, then students had an hour on their device.
At our assembly, there were several teachers who got a pie in their face: Mme. Rawan, Ms. Hocevar, Mr. Orr, Ms. Hocevar, Ms. Di Mascio, and Mr. Foster!

We have some big news....
Our class raised a total of $850, which was the largest amount raised by a class, so we won the MOVIE AND PIZZA PARTY. More information will be communicated regarding when this day will be.

Inquiry into Language
Students completed their Lesson 3 spelling tests, then went on to silent reading.

Inquiry into Math
As a class, we took up the math review. Students corrected their own work with red or blue pens, and put stars on questions they really need to practice. If required, some students stayed in for recess to review the concepts they had more difficulty with, and extra practice was sent home in their green math notebook. Our test is on Monday, so please ensure your child studies using their reviews as the test is very similar to the review. You can even test your child by making up some math questions.

Reading Buddies
We are working closely with the Grade ones on teaching them how to retell a story. After reading a couple pages from the book they have selected, students are to stop and ask their reading buddies what happened on those pages.

Unit of Inquiry
We watched a video called "Henry Settles in Upper Canada." In this video, students learned about the different shops and buildings that existed in the Pioneer village. As a class, we brainstormed a list of adjectives that described Henry's journey to Upper Canada. In addition to this, we brainstormed the buildings Henry passed when he went in to town.
After this, students watched another video called "Homesteading on the Prairies." In this video, they were exposed to the materials that Pioneers used to build houses, and what existed around their house. It also explained the importance of a water well.

Inquiry into Math
Students worked on their math review during our math period today. We will be taking it up tomorrow, to prepare us for the test coming up on Monday. Tomorrow will be the day students can come to me with questions regarding concepts they are still having trouble with. Below are some images of the number lines students had to solve and how to round a number to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, as we went through the process together.

Unit of Inquiry
Students continued to watch a couple videos that taught them about the Early Settlers schoolhouse, classroom, teachers, trading and chores. The first video we watched was about Wolly's gift. In this video, students learned about the chores a young girl had to do during the Pioneer times, and they had to compare this to the chores of a young boy. In addition to this, they were exposed to the process of making wool in order to make items such as dresses, shirts, etc. Once the video was done, we completed a procedural writing activity around the steps to follow in order to make wool. Students copied this onto their worksheet. Notice the use of transition words in this paragraph.
The second video exposed the students to what the children's "schoolhouse" looked like, and how they celebrated once the schoolhouse was built. We got to discuss why the schoolhouse was important, and how it was different from the schools we have today.

In the final video, students got to see how old a teacher could have been at a Pioneer school, what her responsibilities were, how she disciplined the children and the activities that happened during a typical school day. We discussed this material after the video, then the students worked with their peers to complete their worksheets.

Novel Study
In class we read Chapters 5 & 6 of our novel study. In Chapter 5, we learned about what Laura's family did on Sundays, and what happened when they didn't do as they were supposed to. Pa shared a great story to teach Laura and Mary what happens when they don't follow the rules on Sundays. In Chapter 6, we heard about Ma and Laura's encounter with a bear, and Pa's interaction with what he thought was a "bear". Students are to complete Chapter 5 & 6 questions and summary by Friday.

Inquiry into Math
Students received their math review today, and got a chance to start working on this in class. The reviews did not go home as we will be working on them tomorrow in class. Our math test is on Monday. We will be taking the review up on Friday.

Today we learned how to approach a multi-step word problem. These questions contain a lot of information, and sometimes it can be challenging to figure out what has to been done if we do not break it up. So... students learned a problem-solving strategy to help them solve what they need to do in order to solve a multi-step word problem (this goes for typical word problems too).
1. Ask yourself: What is the question really asking me to solve? -- Write this down so you know
2. Write down all the information you know
3. Write out the steps you need to complete in order to arrive at your answer

Take a look at the example below to see how we approached this word problem.
At the end of our math class, students completed a math assessment that is similar to a question on their test. Students had to solve one addition question, and one subtraction question in two different ways. Students were provided with the possible ways to use. They had to remember when each strategy could be used, and how to use each strategy.
