Inquiry into Language:
After French we completed our Lesson 15 spelling test. When we finished our spelling test I challenged to students to see if they could silently arrange themselves into a straight line from shortest to tallest. They used an effective strategy to do so by allowing one student to take charge in arranging the rest of their peers.
RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math:
We had our first lesson on Fractions this afternoon. We went over what some of the key terms are from this unit. Today's lesson focused on identifying what what the numerator and denominator of a fraction is, along with using a fraction to shade in that representation. During our lesson we discussed the difference between proper and improper fractions and briefly went over some examples.

Proper fractions: represents less than a whole-- the numerator is always smaller or equal to the denominator (ex. 5/7 = five sevenths)

Improper fractions: represents more than a whole-- the numerator is larger than the denominator (ex. 8/ 5 = eight fifths)

We also discussed how fractions have to be equal parts. When drawing a shape to represent a fraction we need to insure the parts are equal (or close to it).

Unit of Inquiry/ Door Decorating:
This afternoon we listened to the read aloud of Goldilocks And The Three Bears. We discussed which genre this book was and what makes it fall under that category. To reflect on the features of fairytales, we individually completed a graphic organizer reflecting on the: setting, characters, magic characteristics, problem and solution of this story.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Unit of Inquiry:
Today we focused on Fiction books-- both fantasy and realistic fiction books. We reviewed the features of each of these subgenres to help us later identify whether the story read was fantasy fiction or realistic fiction. We listened to two read alouds: a fantasy and realistic fiction one. As a class we discussed whether the story was fantasy or realistic fiction and justified our answers using our knowledge of each subgenre. The fantasy story we read was "Not Your Typical Dragon". The realistic fiction book was "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day!"As we continue to read books at home and at school, I encourage the students to reflect on the genre of their book and provide reasoning for why they think it is that genre.

Art/ Christmas Door Decorating
Today was Fun Friday! We have a Door Decorating Contest happening where the best classroom door that represents Christmas Spirit wins a Pizza Party. This afternoon we worked very hard on putting our ideas into action and began to assemble the components for our door. I cannot wait to see what the final product will look like as the students worked very hard on putting everything together. I was very happy to have witnessed some terrific communication and teamwork amongst all classmates today!
