Inquiry into Language
Students completed their spelling tests then continued to read until recess.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
Today was a review on how to do translations. Students felt a lot more confident doing translations today. They are encouraged to carefully count the directions given from each vertex in a shape. Some steps to follow to help you successfully translate a shape.
1. Make a dot over each vertex in a shape to help you identify which points you are translating from
2. Translate each vertex according to the directions provided ex. "Move 2 spaces left and 4 spaces up"
3. Once you have translated all four vertices, connect the vertices to create an image of the original shape
4. Make sure that your image is the exact same shape and size of the original shape

Misconception: Remember that when you are translating a shape, the original point that the vertex is on does not count as 1 translation. It has to make a full jump to the next line intersect in order for it to count as a translation of 1 unit.

Unit of Inquiry
Students continued to work on the creation of their plants.

Inquiry into Language
Students began to work on their spelling lesson in their notebooks for about 15 minutes. Students then completed a language Earth Day activity which talks about why we celebrate Earth Day. We discussed a variety of things we can do to help care for the Earth.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
We reviewed the concepts of symmetry through shape folding. Students worked in groups to determine how many lines of symmetry each shape has. Once all groups were finished, we had a class discussion about the lines of symmetry in each shape by having the students that worked on those shapes share how many lines of symmetry they found. This created for some great dialogue as there were a couple disagreements. We then moved on to looking at the 3 transformations we will be focusing on in this unit: translations, reflections and rotations. As a class we reviewed what each of these mean, then we watched a video to enhance this understanding. Students worked on a notebook activity, then had a worksheet to complete for homework. Tomorrow we will be going in depth on reflections.

A message from students in Ms. Jaskolka's Grade 6 class

Donate to people who are homeless

Hi!! Our names are Mona, Joana, and Shivam.

We are doing a project called Exhibition, where we choose a topic we are interested in and want to research more about in order to make a positive difference in our world. We chose the topic of homelessness because we do not want anyone to be without their basic needs. Every person has the right to have a home and food to eat and clothing to wear.
We are collecting donations so that we can donate them to Angela’s Place, a homeless shelter right here in Mississauga.
You can donate:
  • Non perishable food
  • Clothing (for all ages such as Pants, shirts, hats ,shoes and more)
  • Toiletries (mouthwash, feminine products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant)
  • Seasonal clothing
  • Baby formula
  • Diapers
  • Baby products

Reason why we are doing this: Our plan is to help people who are homeless who need food and clothing and any other useful materials. After collecting these materials, we are going to donate all these items to a shelter called “Angela's Place (45 Glenn Hawthorne Blvd, Mississauga, ON L5R 4J9).

Please bring in items by Tuesday April 23, 2019 to Ms. Jaskolka's class (Room 30)

Thank you so much for making the world a better place!

This afternoon, half of the grade 3s went on their fundraising trip to Scooter's Roller Palace with Ms. Chiappetta. The rest of the grade 3s stayed back with me and we did some Reader's Theatre. Reader's Theatre allows students to practice their fluency and expression by continually practicing their roles in their skit. Great job Grade 3s!

Unit of Inquiry
Today we talked about how we can contribute to protecting plant and soil habitats. We discussed how we are responsible for caring for the plants and soil were are surrounded by and the consequences that can arise if we don't care for the soil and plants. We also discussed what soil erosion is and how we can help prevent this from happening.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
Together we worked on a strategy to solve word problems such as solving which 3D solids you can make when provided with a certain number of toothpicks and marshmallows. While doing this, we were able to recognize a pattern that exists when solving the number of vertices and edges in 3D solids:
- Pyramids: to solve the number of edges in a pyramid, multiply the number of edges in your base by 2
- Prisms: to solve the number of edges in a prism, multiply the number of edges in your base by 3. To solve the number of vertices in a prism, multiply the number of edges in your base by 2.
Great job recognizing these patterns grade 3s!
Then we began to work on our Geometry reviews. Reviews will be due on Monday. They will have another work period in class tomorrow.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Language
We continued to read The Secret Garden today. We answered the first two comprehension questions together to ensure we were answering in full sentences. Students are to complete the remaining comprehension questions on pages 2 and 3.
