Day 2

Announcements
- Library Books due May 31st
Bake sale tomorrow
- Casual Day tomorrow

Unit of Inquiry
Today we learned about a variety of advertising techniques by reading through a list of them and going over some examples together. Here are the lists that we went over today. Very soon the students will have to use some of these to create their own advertisements.

Inquiry into Language
For those students who finished their OREO organizers and paragraphs last night, they got to silent read or work on any unfinished homework/corrections. I also took this time to go over those students paragraphs to give them feedback to prepare them for tomorrows OWA. For those who did not finish their paragraphs and organizers, they used this time and time in the afternoon to work on these.

Inquiry into Math
Today we learned about rectangles with equal perimeters. We began by exploring how to identify all of the rectangles that we could draw to represent a perimeter of a set value (ex. 16 cm). I provided students with a particular perimeter measurement, and they had to come up to the board to draw all of the different rectangles we could make by using different dimensions. Once we drew all of our rectangles for 16 cm, we had to solve the area of each rectangle by writing it inside the rectangles. Remember: To find perimeter, we add up all the sides (P= S + S + S + S). To find area, we multiple length x width (A= L x W).

We were able to draw two conclusions about finding rectangles with equal perimeters.
1. Rectangles can have the same perimeter, but their areas can be different
2. In a set of rectangles with the same perimeter, the rectangle that will have the largest area is the one that is a square: it's linear dimensions are the same value all the way around.

Here is one strategy to solve problems that ask you to determine the linear dimensions of all rectangles that have a perimeter of ____. Can you see the strategy?? Hint: look at the pattern that is happening to the numbers that are circled in the same colour.

Students continued to work on their OREO organizers and paragraphs. Some of us were able to take this time to silent read. Below is the sentence structure for the students to remember when writing their persuasive paragraph.
