Reading Buddies
Our first day of reading buddies arrived! We are reading buddies with Ms. Gandy's Grade 1 class. The students did a great job at modeling good reading skills. We asked our reading buddies some questions to see if they understood the text. We will be working on modeling reading and comprehension strategies so help the Grade 1s develop their reading skills!

Inquiry into Language
Students were given some time to work on their cursive writing skills. Each week, cursive writing will be assigned on Monday or Tuesday. The pages assigned are not due until the Friday of that week. Students are encouraged to demonstrate their best cursive writing as they will be required to go back and do it again if I notice that it is not their neatest writing.

Unit of Inquiry
Today we read the diary of a boy named Patrick, who traveled from Ireland to Upper Canada in the 1800s. The diary described some of the experiences that his family and others went through when they let Europe and traveled to Upper Canada to settle. We discussed some of the risks these families took, and why they would be willing to take such risks. In addition to this, we discussed how these individuals may have felt, what they would have seen, heard and smelled on this boat journey. While reading this diary, we also thought about whether it was written in 1st person, 2nd person or 3rd person.

Using the letter from Patrick, students have describe some of the things they would have seen, felt, smelled, tasted, felt (feelings) and heard. Tomorrow we will assemble our ships in class!

Inquiry into Math
Today we learned a variety of ways to represent numbers. We learned the math vocabulary terms "standard form, expanded form, word form and base-ten form." Standard form and expanded form were new to us. The students were each given one or two cut outs of a number represented in a certain way. Students then had to come up one at a time to organize them in our chart paper according to how the number was represented. It was important for the students to pay attention to where their peers pasted their sheets of paper because they had to ensure that their representation of a number matched the others that were in that row on the chart paper.
Students went on to complete a cut and paste activity where they had to sort and paste a set of numbers represented in standard form, expanded form and word from. It's so important that the students look at each digits value based on its place value as this will help them accurately represented the expanded form of that number. Once finished, students began to work on their workbook homework.
The students were working so well and wanted to sing a song they learned in music last year while they worked!

Agenda

Community Circle
This morning for our community circle, students had the option to share the highlight of their weekend with their peers.

Inquiry into Language
This morning we "dove" into our Spelling workbooks. Students began to work on Lesson 1 in their spelling workbooks. Most of the students got through a good chunk of their spelling. Our spelling lesson is due on Thursday, and our spelling test will be on Friday. It is important that students understand the meaning of their list words as their spelling tests will require them to use their list words in a sentence that makes sense, and with the words spelled correctly.

Unit of Inquiry
We began our first UOI with our "Where we are in place and time" unit. We discussed our central idea, key concepts and lines of inquiry. We also discussed the learner profiles (Open-minded), along with the attitudes and attributes (Appreciation & Curiosity) that we will be focusing on during this UOI.
To begin with, we had a discussion regarding these three questions:
- How do you think Canada has changed from the 1800s to now?
- Who lived in Canada in the 1800s?
- What challenges do you think the people of the 1800s faced?
The students had some really good thoughts that are connected to what we will be learning about. After we finished this discussion, students went around the classroom to engage in discussions with their peers regarding the "discussion card" they landed at. It'll be interested to see and hear their thinking when they find out the modes of transportation and communication that existed in the 1800s.

Lastly, the students filled out a "Wonder" sheet to jot down some of the current wonders they have. This will be left up in the classroom for us to add any additional wonders to throughout our unit.

Inquiry into Math
Our focus in math today was on how to add and subtract using place value. Students asked some great questions, such as "What do I do if I have a 0 in my tens and ones place? ex. 600- 121". We went through some examples of how to solve questions like this before beginning our worksheets. When working on the word problems, we discussed the questions together to help us determine whether we had to add or subtract. Students are required to write word sentences to explain what their sum or difference means. Refer to example below

Important notes to remember:
- When subtracting, your top number always needs to be larger than your bottom number
- Always line up your digits in their according place value
- Show your work-- especially when regrouping
- You cannot skip over one place value when borrowing (Ex. if the number is 602, you cannot borrow from the 6 and add it directly to the 2, your tens would have to borrow from your hundreds, then your ones could borrow from your tens-- 6 becomes 5, 0 becomes 10 then turns into 9 since the 2 becomes 12 once you borrow). We went through some examples together.

Inquiry into Language
This morning we began to work on our "Big Day" package. Students were able to engage in table talk while completing this, as long as they remained on task. They selected appropriate work areas where they felt they would best complete their work. All incomplete sheets in this package are for homework and due Monday. I'm excited to see their responses!

Students completed the writing component of their DRA. Again, student's had the opportunity to pick an area anywhere in the classroom to complete this task.

Welcome to Grade 3!
We started our day off by noticing some differences in our classroom this year, and asking any questions we had about objects, routines and expectations. As a class, we brainstormed a list of important characteristics that we want to resemble in our classroom. We thought of what we want our class to look like, sound like and feel like. The characteristics that stood out the most will be resembled in our classroom contract. Tomorrow, all students will sign the classroom contract!

Inquiry into Language
Student's participated in a class Scavenger hunt where they had to find names of their peers who had completed certain activities. It was quite challenging to ensure they asked every classmate.

Inquiry into Math
Prior to starting our first math unit, we played a little addition and subtraction game called "Scoot." Addition and Subtraction cards were put out around the desks, and students had to complete the addition or subtraction question that was on the desk they were sitting at and record their work on the recording sheet. When I said "Scoot," students got up and moved to the desk next to them to complete that question. They seemed to really enjoy this game, which is great as they will be seeing more of this game in the future! The students were so quiet while participating in this game!
Check out what it looked like below!

House Game:
At the end of the day, we had our VERY FIRST HOUSE GAME of the year!
