Community Circle
This morning for our community circle, students had the option to share the highlight of their weekend with their peers.
Inquiry into Language
This morning we "dove" into our Spelling workbooks. Students began to work on Lesson 1 in their spelling workbooks. Most of the students got through a good chunk of their spelling. Our spelling lesson is due on Thursday, and our spelling test will be on Friday. It is important that students understand the meaning of their list words as their spelling tests will require them to use their list words in a sentence that makes sense, and with the words spelled correctly.
Unit of Inquiry
We began our first UOI with our "Where we are in place and time" unit. We discussed our central idea, key concepts and lines of inquiry. We also discussed the learner profiles (Open-minded), along with the attitudes and attributes (Appreciation & Curiosity) that we will be focusing on during this UOI.
To begin with, we had a discussion regarding these three questions:
- How do you think Canada has changed from the 1800s to now?
- Who lived in Canada in the 1800s?
- What challenges do you think the people of the 1800s faced?
The students had some really good thoughts that are connected to what we will be learning about. After we finished this discussion, students went around the classroom to engage in discussions with their peers regarding the "discussion card" they landed at. It'll be interested to see and hear their thinking when they find out the modes of transportation and communication that existed in the 1800s.
Lastly, the students filled out a "Wonder" sheet to jot down some of the current wonders they have. This will be left up in the classroom for us to add any additional wonders to throughout our unit.
Inquiry into Math
Our focus in math today was on how to add and subtract using place value. Students asked some great questions, such as "What do I do if I have a 0 in my tens and ones place? ex. 600- 121". We went through some examples of how to solve questions like this before beginning our worksheets. When working on the word problems, we discussed the questions together to help us determine whether we had to add or subtract. Students are required to write word sentences to explain what their sum or difference means. Refer to example below
Important notes to remember:
- When subtracting, your top number always needs to be larger than your bottom number
- Always line up your digits in their according place value
- Show your work-- especially when regrouping
- You cannot skip over one place value when borrowing (Ex. if the number is 602, you cannot borrow from the 6 and add it directly to the 2, your tens would have to borrow from your hundreds, then your ones could borrow from your tens-- 6 becomes 5, 0 becomes 10 then turns into 9 since the 2 becomes 12 once you borrow). We went through some examples together.
