Dance Party FRIDAY!
Unit of Inquiry
We learned about BUOYANCY today! We began with an experiment where we had to predict which objects we think will sink and which will float. While doing the experiment, we recorded the results on our worksheet. We learned how the density of an object can impact whether an object is buoyant or not. We looked at how the molecules in objects that are more dense and less dense. The closer together the molecules are, the more dense the object. Objects that are more dense will float in water. Objects whose molecules are spread out will be less dense, and will therefore sink.  If an object is buoyant, that means that it will float in water.
After this we learned the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces. Balanced forces are when two opposite forces are equal and therefore cancel each other out. Balanced forces do not cause the motion of an object to change. Unbalanced forces are when one opposite force is stronger than the other, which results in a change in the motion (movement) of an object.

Inquiry into Math
Today was our final lesson on fractions, which was all about Ordering & Comparing fractions. When doing so, we need to reflect on this question to help us better compare fractions: Is this fraction greater than, less than or equal to ONE WHOLE?!?!? By asking this question it makes it much easier for you to identify which fractions are larger than others.

We discussed how when fractions have whole numbers in front, the mixed fraction with the higher whole number would be greater. Then, we looked at how to compare proper fractions that have the same numerator but different denominator, or same denominator but different numerator.

Same numerator but different denominator:
If the numerator is the same, you need to reflect on the denominator to see which fraction is divided into bigger slices. The lower the denominator the bigger the slices.
For example: A fraction with the denominator of 4 will have bigger slices than a denominator of 6 since you would have to cut the whole into more slices, therefore each slice is smaller.

Same denominator but different numerator:
If the denominator is the same but the numerators are different then you need to look for the fraction that has the higher numerator because that would represent more of the "pie".
For example: A fraction with the numerator 3 will be smaller than a fraction with a numerator of 7. (3/8 is less than 7/8).
Lastly, students received their math review. It is due on Monday. To clarify how to represent the same fraction as a whole and as a set, refer to the photo below.

Inquiry into Language
We took up our context clues homework together. Then we swapped duotangs with the person next to us and as a class, we took up the grammar practice skills. While doing so, we had to make sure we made all editing marks on there to correct their work (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, order of words, etc.). We also completed our Lesson 20 spelling test.

Later in the day, some of the Grade 4 students who competed in their speech competition today came to share their speeches with us. We got to ask them some questions about the topics they selected, along with what some of the most challenging components of their speech writing process. Thank you for sharing your speeches with us Rohaan, Alister & Arya!
