We had library today with Ms. Hayward! If you have any outstanding books at home, please remember to return those to Ms. Hayward as soon as possible.

Inquiry into Math
We started off with a review on identifying equivalent fractions along with how we can represent the same fraction as a whole and as a set.
Then we learned about the names for different types of fractions today: proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed fractions. Please refer to the image below to see what each consists of.
While discussing what each type of fraction consists of, we looked at how we could represent one of each using a picture.
Students went off to complete a sorting cut & paste activity where they had to identify what type of fraction each slip of paper represented. Then they went on to filling in a chart where they had to represent the word form, fraction form and picture form of a variety of fractions. Remember, if it is an improper of mixed fraction, you CANNOT represent it as a fraction of a set.
If students completed these, they were instructed to continue with converting worksheets where they had to change mixed fractions into improper fractions and improper fractions into mixed fractions. I did not teach this process to students. I had the steps written on the chart papers below and told students I want to see how they can interpret and apply these steps to complete the conversions, along with how they can use the examples on their worksheets to help them. So far, those who got to this sheet were able to interpret the steps they had to apply to solve each fraction. I look forward to seeing more of this tomorrow!

Novel Study
We finished the very last chapter of our novel study today. It was so sad to finish reading this book as it is such a beautiful novel. Students started their responses for this chapter, along with a character analysis of Heidi. We also had some time to reflect on our thoughts on this book.

Unit of Inquiry
We learned all about Gravity today. We started off with an experiment predicting which objects we thought would fall to the ground first when dropped at the same time. We discussed why we thought some objects fell faster, then watched a video on gravity to help explain the reasons behind why some of the objects fell faster, such as a flat sheet of paper vs. a crumpled piece of paper. Once we finished this, we began to complete the fill in the blank worksheet on Gravity using the word bank provided. We talked about how we can use context clues to help us determine which words makes the most sense in that sentence.
