Inquiry into Math
Our learning goal today was to be able to identify and solve equivalent fractions. We started off by explaining what equivalent fractions mean.Equivalent fractions are fractions that equal the same amount. We went through a couple of examples to see what equivalent fractions look like, then began to explore these in partners. We used fraction strips to identify a variety of equivalent fractions.
While you can use fraction strips to solve equivalent fractions, we can also use multiplication and division.
- When using multiplication, you have to multiply both the numerator and denominator of your original fraction by the same value. What you do to the top, you must do to the bottom
ex. 2/6 = 4/12
two-sixths = four-twelfths
- When using division, you have to divide both the numerator and denominator of your original fraction by the same value. You can only use this when your numerator is larger than 1 and both your numerator and denominator can be divided by the same value.
We used one of the questions from our workbooks to see how we can use division to solve equivalent fractions. With this question, we saw how we can make a shape divided into 10 pieces similar to the representation of a shape divided into 5 pieces. (above picture)
Once they finished in their groups, students went on to complete their homework.
Inquiry into Language
To help us better understand new vocabulary in text we read we learned about context clues. Context clues are hints in the text that help us understand the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. They allow us to make sense of the text without having to go get a dictionary while we are reading or just completely skipping over the word (which "good readers" don't do).
The video we watched explained the four types of context clues: examples, explanations, synonyms and antonyms. We got to see how each of these types of clues were used in different texts. Then we went off on our own to apply our knowledge of context clues to identify the meaning of the words underlined in a variety of sentences.
At the end of the day Mya presented her speech since she was absent on Friday.
Unit of Inquiry
We went over some of the examples that students came up with for homework. Then we discussed some vocabulary terms we can use to identify the direction and speed of an object. After this we learned a little bit more about some of the forces we will begin exploring this week: magnetic force and static electricity. We used our highlighters to identify important information in these pieces of text, then went on to sorting the 6 forces we learned about into a Venn Diagram. In our Venn Diagram we determined which forces are pulling, pushing or both. We also got to feel the forces of magnets when opposite poles face each other, along with when the same poles are attracted to each other.
Once our Venn Diagrams were copied down in our binders, we broke out into the same partners from this morning to create a workout circuit that addresses some of the ways we can use our muscular forces.
