Unit of Inquiry
Today we discussed our observations from the clay and car activity on Friday; how we increased and decreased the speed of the car, along with how we changed the shape of the clay. Then we moved on to learning about several of the forces we will be learning about in this unit. We used highlighters to identify the important information for each force. We were able to identify which forces are pushing forces and which are pulling forces. Lastly, we talked about how we can increase friction and decrease friction.
Inquiry into Math
Our learning goal today was to be able to solve the fraction of a set. We started off with a relevant example by looking at the fraction of the total amount of students in our class. If I said five-sixths of the students in our class were here today, we had to solve how many students this represented.
We followed these steps:
1. Identify the fraction of a set statement
2. Draw your total number of groups
3. Split up the total amount of students into equal groups among the groups you drew in step 2
4. Count the total number of students in the number of groups that are present. (This is the numerator of your fraction from the statement you wrote in step one-- "5/6")
After completing a couple examples, we looked at the relationship between the numerator, the number in each group and the numerical value (our answer) that represents that fraction of a set. You can multiply the number in each group by your numerator which will give you your answer.
We also completed a problem solving question together to help us break down a word problem revolved around fractions of a set. I loved seeing the students walk me through the steps and better yet, explain to me what each value we solved represented.
Students completed a couple examples on their whiteboards. Once these were confirmed correct, they went on to working on their homework.
Inquiry into Language
We read chapters 15, 16 and 17 of our novel study today. We are so so so close to finishing the novel Heidi which makes me so excited because it is such a beautiful story! We discussed the responses they had to the last chapters questions and reflected on how we can make our responses better by adding specific details from the text to supporting our general statements. I love seeing more and more complete sentences in their responses!
At the end of the day we started some grammar practice! Today's focus was on writing complete sentences and questions with capital letters and correct punctuation marks. We had to identify which sentences are statements vs. questions, along with brainstorm a question that could be asked to get the response sentence that was provided. We will continue to complete activities like this to develop the habit of starting our sentences with capital letters and completing our sentences with the appropriate punctuation mark.
