We started our new novel study today. We are reading the book Heidi. Before we began to read today's chapters we went over the comprehension questions we would have to answer so we knew what information to look for. As we read chapters 1 & 2 together, we stopped to discuss some of the phrases and vocabulary to see if they understood what was happening. In addition to this, we did a character analysis for several of the characters in these chapters and also discussed the information that we need to answer our comprehensions questions. Comprehension questions are due tomorrow.
Unit of Inquiry
Similar to yesterday, we learned about three industries today and their effects on communities: Fishing, Farming and Mining industries. We discussed how these industries have a positive and negative effect on people and communities.
Inquiry into Math
We learned all about estimating time today. We began with an activity where students picked a partner and brainstormed a list of activities they could do in the class. Once they had a couple ideas, students estimated how long it would take them to complete these activities and then actually did them to record their time.
We learned about the importance of using reasonable estimates to complete a task to provide us with a rough idea of how long it takes us to do something. IE. Does it take me 2 minutes or 40 minutes to brush my teeth? Definitely 2 minutes
Then we learned how to round time to the nearest 5 minutes. I expressed how important it is to understand when to round up or down and what each value rounds to as this ties into how we round money since we no longer use pennies. I wrote four rules on the board for students to follow when responding to questions.
We completed some examples of rounding time to the nearest minute together then looked at how to solve a word problem. When solving the word problem, it's important:
- To understand exactly what the question is asking you to solve
--> Is it asking you to solve the start or finish time of an activity?
--> Is it asking you to solve approximately how much time has passed?
- To understand what your solution represents
- To include a word sentence that reflects the question
Above are some examples we did!
Above is an example of the word problem we completed together. First we brainstormed the steps we would have to complete to solve these, then applied these steps to solve the problem.
Above is an example of how to solve how much time has passed from one time to another using both subtraction and a number line. Tomorrow we will be learning more about elapsed time so we will be doing more of this!
