Book Fair

Science Fair Award Assembly
This morning we started off with our Science Fair Award Assembly! Congratulations to Ms. Chiappetta's, Mr. Foster's and Ms. Hughes classes for placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Inquiry into Language
Today we brainstormed ideas for the letter we later wrote together. The topic was: Write a letter to your parents expressing your favourite and least favourite food. First we identified what the topic was asking us to do. After this we brainstormed ideas to support our favourite food (Lasagna) and least favourite food (Broccoli) in our brainstorm bubble. We reflected on how long our "brainstorm" took for when they complete similar tasks so they can monitor how much time they are spending on their brainstorm. Then we sat in a circle and wrote our class letter together, bouncing ideas off each other. While doing this we reflected on how we:
- Make sure our sentences are connected to each other and have meaning
- Use transition words to connect our ideas
- Use supporting details for each topic discussed in our letter
- Use correct punctuation marks
- Make personal connections to the ideas we are expressing
- Included all the components of a letter

Inquiry into Math
We took up some questions from our homework on the Distributive Property to reflect on how well we understood this concept. After this we went through one of the word problems together and underlined any important information and numbers. We walked through each step together to solve this question, then students continued to work on the remaining 5 problems. An organization skill that I wanted the students to work on today was neatly organizing all their work (steps) in the box provided, without it overlapping into the next book. From what I noticed, they worked really hard at ensuring they kept all their work for each question in its own box.

Unit of Inquiry
During our last snack, we learned about Stress. First we completed individual self-assessments on our understanding of stress and concepts related to stress. Then students completed another self-assessment on how stressed they feel on a variety of topics such as: home, family, friends, homework, etc. Once our self-assessments were done, some students read an article on what stress is, how it makes us feel, different types of stress and solutions to overcome stress. For homework, students have to complete a Stress Journal entry identifying their stressors and how they cope with them. lc
