Inquiry into Math
Today we learned how to solve the unknown term in addition and subtraction equations. First, we learned what an equation is. Equations show that two or more things are equal. Then, we went through some examples of equations, and how we know they're equations: the left side has to be equal to he right side (refer to examples below). After we examined some equations, we completed four examples together of how to solve the missing term in both addition and subtraction equations. Students were given about 5-7 minutes to complete one question, someone shared how they solved it to the class, then we moved onto the next one and did the same thing. Rather than just being told how to solve it, it's good for the students to experience some struggle as this struggle and multiple attempts at solving the problem, typically leads them towards the solution, which then learning has happened. Once we finished these examples, students began to work on their homework.
Note: The most important part of solving an unknown term in an equation is the CHECKING part. Once they have "solved" the value of the missing term, they need to make sure that the left side of that equation is equal to the right side.
UOI
For homework, students have to complete a worksheet where they have to identify potential ways an individual may cope with the situations provided. We talked about what coping strategies are and how they help us control our emotions/ manage our stress. We read through each scenario together and discussed potential coping strategies that anyone could use for each scenario. One of the boxes on this sheet asks students to come up with their own situation/scenario. Students will have the opportunity to present this on Monday and we will discuss potential coping strategies that can be used.
Science Fair
In the afternoon, we got to check out some of the other science fair projects that were done, along with watch the Grade 6's compete in a couple competitions using the cars they created for their science fair project! This was really fun to be a part of!
After this, we presented our science fair project to families who came to check out the experiment that we completed, along with other projects in the school. Thank you to all who came to listen and ask questions about our experiment!
