Unit of Inquiry
In the morning, we had some time to finish our displays and practice presenting them. After this, some students presented their research. We will continue with presentations tomorrow.
Inquiry into Math
In Math, we learned the math vocabulary to describe each term in a division fact by looking at a division fact written two ways. We also discussed what each number represents in the division fact (total, number of groups, and number of items in each group). For this unit, our dividend should always be the largest number. Our dividend is always the number we are dividing into (the first number in the equation).
We then learned two strategies to solve division facts: use multiplication and using arrays.
Using Multiplication Strategy:
When using this strategy, we have to think what number do we need to multiply our divisor by to get our dividend? In addition to this, we looked at how to identify all of the fact family facts for a set of numbers.
Ex. 36 / 4 = ___
Think: "What number do I need to multiply 4 by to get to 36?"
OHHHHH 9! So my quotient must be 9!
Using arrays:
When using this strategy, we have to identify what the total number of items we are supposed to have, along with how many rows we should have. Once we have identified this, we can begin to draw our array.
Ex. 28 / 7 = _____
Think: "I know I should have 28 pieces in total, and that I should have 7 rows. I am going to draw my seven rows, then continue count on as I add one more to each row. Once I have reached my total, 28, I have to count how many items are in each row, and that is my answer."
Lastly, as mentioned yesterday, if you have to solve your dividend, you have to multiply your divisor by you quotient, since division is "backwards multiplication".
