International Day
Our class will be representing GREECE! Each student has been partnered up, and they have been assigned a topic to research. The topic they are assigned is highlighted on the letter that went home. Please have your child research their topic and bring all their research findings to school by TOMORROW
Unit of Inquiry
We continued to work on our summatives today. Some of us are ready to go off an start our paragraphs, whereas others have to go back and add more details to our jot notes.
Inquiry into Math
We started today with a quick multiplication facts quiz on our 3x table. After this, students learned three multiplication strategies that revolve around using mental math for the 4x, 6x and 7x table.
Using the information on the chart above, we were able to identify which strategy we could use to solve a multiplication fact, then solved it using that strategy.
ex. If the question was 6 x 4, we should be able to recognize that we could use the known facts or doubling strategy, since these two strategies involve breaking down the 6 into 5 and 1 (since 5 + 1 = 6), or the 4 into 2 and 2 (since 2 + 2 = 4). We worked on a worksheet that had us identify which strategy we could use, then solved it using that strategy. We have to keep in mind that the easiest numbers to break down are 4, 6 and 7, along with which numbers these break down in to to make it easiest to solve.
Ex. 7 x 6
If using the strategy facts of 5 and 2, I should break the 7 into 5 and 2, not 4 and 3, or 6 and 1, as 5 and 2 are one of the first numbers we learn to skip count by, meaning the times table facts for these numbers should be the easiest.
In addition to multiplication strategies, we discussed how to correctly draw arrays to represent a multiplication fact, along with how to identify the multiplication fact that represents an array.
Inquiry into Language
As a class, we read Chapter 9 "Going to Town". Once we finished reading, we got into pairs and each summarized the chapter in our own words verbally, before we went to write it on paper. I find that having children summarize the text verbally helps them better translate that information onto paper, as they have already talked about it. Once we each got a turn to share our summary, we went off to begin writing our summary for this chapter.
Agenda
- Read for 25 minutes
- Math pg. 58 & 59 (no game)
- Spelling test tomorrow
