Fall Fundraiser
Our annual "Spring" fundraiser has changed to an annual "Fall" fundraiser! Forms went home today and are due by THIS WEDNESDAY- TOMORROW!!
There was an informative letter that went home, along with a sign up sheet for your child and you to determine which daily events they would like to participate in. The schedule is:
Monday: PYJAMA DAY
Tuesday: POPCORN DAY
Wednesday: ICE CREAM SANDWICH DAY
Thursday: WACKY THURSDAY
Friday: ELECTRONICS PARTY
It costs $2 per event for whichever your child would like to participate in. Please check off the events that they select on the sheet and return by Wednesday. In addition to this, the Grades 3- 6 students will attend Glow Zone if they bring in a minimum of $40 in donations. This means, if they choose to participate in all 5 events above, plus the field trip, they should be bringing in at least $50.
Please note, if your child would like to purchase more than 1 popcorn, or ice cream sandwich, they are able to do so. It is $2 per bag of popcorn and $2 per ice cream sandwich.
What's better than a pizza party... pizza and a movie! The top fundraising class wins a movie and pizza party! Let's go Ms. Foti's class!

Inquiry into Language
We continued to read our novel study, "Little House in The Big Woods." While reading, we stop to discuss what is happening. We also reflect on how the novel connects to our unit of inquiry. Once we finished reading chapter 3, we worked on creating a class summary of this chapter using Google docs, projected on our class TV. While writing the summary, we reflected on how we could rephrase sentences, along with checking over our paragraph to ensure it makes sense. Tomorrow we will write a summary for Chapter 4 together as a class. So far, this is what we wrote for Chapter 3:
"Every night, Mary and Laura helped Pa make some shiny new bullets for his gun. While they helped Pa make the bullets, they also helped clean the gun. Pa prepared his gun at night so that he could get it quickly if he had to shoot an animal. After they polished and loaded the gun, Pa told Mary and Laura a story about him and the voice in the woods when he was a young boy. The story taught Laura and Mary to always obey their parents because their parents know what is best for them and how to stay safe in the woods. "
Unit of Inquiry
During UOI, we completed an assessment based on what we have learned about the daily lives of European settlers, First Nations and our lives. Students had to compare the daily lives of children amongst each other by using a Venn Diagram to demonstrate their learning.
Inquiry into Math
We continued with estimating sums and differences today, by using rounding, front-end estimation and clustering. Students are required to carefully read the questions and think about what it is asking them to solve before even starting to do any math. Before asking for help, students are encouraged to think about what they have to do in order to solve the question. This will help them develop a better conceptual understanding of the concepts we are learning.
We went through some examples of how to determine whether an estimate is "too high" or "too low". In order to determine and explain this, students need to estimate the sum or difference of the numbers provided to demonstrate their understanding.
We also did some examples together of how to think of two numbers that could give you a sum of _____ when rounded.
Example: Two numbers that will give you a sum of 950.
