Reading Buddies
We had reading buddies with Ms. Gandy's class today!

Unit of Inquiry
We listened to a read aloud of the books calls "The Drum Calls Softly". While introducing students to the song of the Cree Round Dancec, the story addresses the importance of music, dance and ceremonies to the First Nation people. While listening to the Round Dance song, students had to use shapes, lines and colours to demonstrate what they feel while listening to the song. Once they were finished doing this, they responded to a comprehension question in their binders, where they had to explain why dance, music and ceremonies were important to the First Nations people by using information from the book to support their answers.

Inquiry into Math
Today we looked at some mental math strategies to add and subtract.
The two mental math strategies for adding are: making a friendly number and adding on.
For subtraction, we looked at making friendly numbers, and we will look at the second strategy tomorrow, counting on.
Friendly numbers are numbers that are multiples of 100.
When faced with an addition or subtraction problem involving the use of mental math, students need to reflect on which strategy would be best to use. Take a look at the charts and examples below to see when we use each strategy to help you determine which strategy to use. We did some examples together on the board. Tomorrow, students will learn the second mental math strategy for subtraction, then get to work on completing questions that involve demonstrating their understanding of these concepts.
Addition
We had a hard time understanding how "691 is 700-9" so I explained to students that they are the same thing. When you solve 700-9, your answer is 691, which means your number sentence and sum represent the same thing.
\
Subtraction
For subtraction, students had a hard time understanding why you have to take away or add the same amount to each of the numbers involved in the number sentence. The example above helped the students get a better understanding by noticing what has to happen to the numbers in the first column and the second column inn order for you to get the same value for your difference. The explanation for this is: If you make a friendly number by increasing your number (ex. 526 - 298), 298 becomes 300, so you added 2, this means you are subtracting two more than you actually should. So to ensure you get the correct answer, you also need to ensure the amount that you start off with (526) also increases by the same amount, therefore, the difference between each set of numbers remain the same.
526- 298 = 228
(Since 298 increases by 2 to make 300, 526 also has to increase by 2).
528 - 300 = 228
