Fall Fundraiser
Our annual "Spring" fundraiser has changed to an annual "Fall" fundraiser! Forms went home today and are due by THIS WEDNESDAY!!
There was an informative letter that went home, along with a sign up sheet for your child and you to determine which daily events they would like to participate in. The schedule is:
Monday: PYJAMA DAY
Tuesday: POPCORN DAY
Wednesday: ICE CREAM SANDWICH DAY
Thursday: WACKY THURSDAY
Friday: ELECTRONICS PARTY
It costs $2 per event for whichever your child would like to participate in. Please check off the events that they select on the sheet and return by Wednesday. In addition to this, the Grades 3- 6 students will attend Glow Zone if they bring in a minimum of $40 in donations. This means, if they choose to participate in all 5 events above, plus the field trip, they should be bringing in at least $50.
Please note, if your child would like to purchase more than 1 popcorn, or ice cream sandwich, they are able to do so. It is $2 per bag of popcorn and $2 per ice cream sandwich.
What's better than a pizza party... pizza and a movie! The top fundraising class wins a movie and pizza party! Let's go Ms. Foti's class!

Inquiry into Language
Students began to work on Lesson 2 in their spelling workbooks. This weeks focus is on the "hard" and "soft" c and g sounds. The "hard c" sounds as in "car" vs. the "soft c" sound as in "ice." The "hard g" sound as in "game" vs. the "soft g" sound as in "giant."
Unit of Inquiry
In UOI we read our final 2 journal entries from a boy names "Hania," who was a First Nations boy, and a girl named "Penelope", who was a European settler child. These journal entries shed some light on the relationships that occurred between the First Nations and the European settlers, both adults and children, along with the roles of men, women and children during this time. They also got us reflecting on the culture of the First Nations and the things they believed and valued.
Inquiry into Math
Today we learned about different strategies we can use to estimate both sums and differences. To estimate the difference of a set of numbers, we use rounding. To estimate the sum of a set of numbers, we can use clustering, rounding or front-end estimation. We went through what each of these mean, did some examples together, then looked at word sentences to determine which strategy would be best to use. It's important that the students understand why certain strategies may be better to use for some questions, and not so much for others. We will be continuing with estimating sums and differences tomorrow.
We also discussed which place value would be the best to round to in order to find the best estimate for a set of numbers. By looking at the example above, you can see that by rounding to the nearest ten, you will get a closer estimate to the actual sum or difference. Students also completed a math quiz today on representing, rounding and comparing numbers.
Agenda:
- Read for 25 minutes
- Cursive writing pg. 12-15 due Friday
- Spelling lesson 2 due Thursday
- UOI questions from Penelope's journal
