Welcome to Grade 3!!!
Language:
This morning we began with reviewing what adjectives are and brainstorming some adjectives to describe ourselves. Students created an Acrostic Poem using their first name by thinking of adjectives that describe them.

Unit of Inquiry:
One of our current Units of Inquiry is all about story writing. We learn about the different genres of stories, components of a story and begin writing our own story. Today we completed a creative writing activity through story telling. Each student began their own story on a sheet of paper. After about 5-7 minutes of writing they folded their papers so that only the last line they wrote was showing. Then the students shifted one desk to the left and picked up writing the story their classmate had began. After we rotated 3 times, some students presented the story they originally started to see how their classmates developed the story. It was very interesting and funny to see some of the ideas they came up with.

Reading Buddies:
This afternoon they had the opportunity to be reading buddies to Mr. Foster's Grade 1 class (SKs).
Inquiry into Math:
In math we focused on multiplication through skip counting. To review our 2, 3 and 5 multiplication facts we played a multiplication game. To help us with our multiplication facts of 3, we thought of it as "skip counting" since that's basically what we are doing. Everyone stood up and we went around in a circle saying the number that came next (eg. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10...). If a student said the incorrect number or took more than 5 seconds, they had to sit down and the next person had to say the next number. They also had to sit down if they were the number 20, 30 or 50 as that meant we had to start counting again by that number fact. Although skip counting by 3 was more challenging for some of us, I loved how we went from not wanting to participate since we don't know them that well, to being willing to try (and they all did fantastic at adding on to solve the next number). It was great to see when this happened the students referring to a quote up in our class:
After the game we made "cootie-catchers" with our multiplication facts of 2, 3, or 5, then we got to play with our cootie-catchers by testing each other. I hope you get to try these out at home!
