Inquiry into Language: Novel Study
We began our day today discussing where we left off in our novel. We then took turns reading Chapter 6 together. As we read together we stopped to predict what we thought may happen next, along with discussed the events that occurred. As we continue to read we verified whether our prediction was correct or incorrect and explained why this was so.
RECESS/ LUNCH
Unit of Inquiry:
We briefly experienced what hunting and trapping was like for the Pioneers by completing a scavenger hunt with Ms. Chiappetta's class around the school. We were divided into five groups of five, and each group was assigned an animal to track around the school. We then had to go around the school and record where our animals footprints were. As we progressed from footprint to footprint we got closer to where our animal was. Once we reached our animal we had to verify that we were tracking the right animal along the way. This was a good team work activity as members were to stick together and not move ahead as Pioneers would not do so while they were hunting/trapping animals. We had a lot of fun walking around the school to find our animals prints. We also learned about how the Native people (which we now refer to as Indigenous) taught the Pioneers how to hunt, trap and fish.
Inquiry into Math:
We learned how to add using place value (which we already know) and expanded form. Place value is the way we typically add our numbers so we were all aware of this. We learned how we can use the expanded form to add 3 and 4-digit numbers.
Step 1: represent each number in expanded form and line then up under their according place value as you would if you were adding by place value.
Step 2: Adding 3-digit numbers: add the hundreds and tens together. Once you have this, add the ones.
Adding 4-digit numbers: Add the thousands and hundreds together. Add the tens and ones together. Then add your answer from each one together to get your sum
We worked on a few examples of the expanded form together, then we played a game called Scoot. For this game students had to complete a variety of 3 and 4-digit questions using both of the strategies we learned about today. They rotated around the class every time they heard "Scoot" to answer the next question so everyone completed the same questions at some point. As they moved to the next question I told them whether they would use the "place value" or "expanded form" to solve each problem or else we would have always resorted to the place value form. They enjoyed this game and were looking forward to doing more place value adding!
Novel Study Continued:
After recess we continued our game of Scoot, which then led into the next chapter of our novel study. Similar to this morning, we continued to discuss the events that took place and new vocabulary. We discussed the difference between asking a question beginning with "Can" vs. "May" as this was brought up in the chapter. We learned about some aspects of trading in the 1800s, along with how the Pioneers made syrup. The chapters we read today were strongly connected to what we have learned/ will continue to learn in our UOI.
Agenda:
- Math: Coding worksheet and Adding Shapes worksheet. Please ensure we look at the highlighted instructions on the sheet as this tells us which form we have to use to solve the questions
- Cursive Writing: Pages 12 & 13
- Reading: Read for 25 minutes
- Spelling: Lesson 2 due Thursday
- Spelling Test FRIDAY
