Inquiry into Math:
We learned a new mental math strategy: adding on. This strategy involves using our knowledge of expanded form and skip counting by 100, 10 and 1. We discussed the two different ways we can approach questions using this strategy

Step 1: Identify what the bigger addend is. This is going to remain the same. The smaller addend will change to expanded form in the number sentence.
        Ex. 483 + 519
              519 + 400 + 80 + 3
Step 2: This means you need to first skip count by 100 four times from 519 (to represent 400)
             519,  619, 719. 819, 919

Step 3: Then you take your final number from step 2 and skip count by 10 eight times (to represent 80)
           919, 929, 939, 949, 959, 969, 979, 989, 999

Step 4: Finally the number you landed at in step 3 and skip count by 1 three times (3)
        999, 1000, 1001, 1002

Your answer is 1002. This is how you would demonstrate the skip counting by place value. Another way they can do it is very similar to above, but this way doesn't show all the skip counting done. It shows the adding in steps.

Step 1: 483 + 519
Step 2: 519 + 400 + 80 + 3
Step 3: 519 + 400 = 919
Step 4: 900 +80 = 999
Step 5: 999 + 3 = 1002

For homework we are to teach mom and dad how to add by using this mental math strategy: adding on.

Unit of Inquiry:
We had so much fun continuing to build our log cabins. We used our creative ideas to add details around our log cabins based on the knowledge we have gained through our novel study and unit of inquiry. Take a look at the process and final products!

Reading Buddies:
Today we began our reading buddy program! We read with Mr. Foster's Grade 1 class. We all enjoyed modelling what good reading habits and behaviour look like. Through reading buddies we hope to practice our own reading habits, but also teach our young friends reading strategies they could use when they come across challenging words of information they don't understand. Great job Grade 3s and Grade 1s!


OWA:
We completed our OWA letter writing today.
