Inquiry into Language: Novel Study
We began our day with our Daily Language Skills. Once we finished we continued with Chapter 2 in our novel study. Together we discussed the events that occurred and the meaning of some of the vocabulary in this chapter. For novel study we are to complete the Chapter 2 Winter Days and Winter Nights worksheet. This requires us to think back on how Pa and Ma had fun with their children, how Mary and Laura had fun together, and the different jobs each person had. If last nights homework was not complete we are to finish drawing, colouring and answering the questions for tomorrow.

Unit of Inquiry:
Today we learned about the different types of homes the Pioneers lived in and made from when they first settled to later on in their life. As a class we took turns reading through the text called Early Pioneer Homes. We began to answer the comprehension activity together, then we worked in groups of 3 to complete this sheet. We are learning how to prove that we know that our answer is correct by highlighting the sentence that provides us with this information. We enjoy this, and it helps us learn different strategies we could use to find information that is relevant to the questions we have to answer.

Inquiry into Math
Today we reviewed the concept of rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. I provided the class with a number on the board and told them which place value they had to round to. Each of us had a mini whiteboard to write on to hold up our answer once majority were done. Once we completed a couple of these, we worked on some challenging questions we had in our homework.

When rounding to the nearest 10,100 or 1000, we need to be aware of the two numbers that belong at the beginning of our number line and end of our number line. To identify these numbers we need to look at the digit in the place value we are rounding to and identify what two tens, hundreds or thousands this number falls between. Once we know this we have to figure out which end of the number line this number is closer to. It helps to identify the midpoint between these two numbers, which allows us to see if the number falls on the smaller end or larger end.

Ex. round 3729 to the nearest hundred
Step 1: underline the hundreds place       (3729)
Step 2: Since we are rounding to the nearest hundred, what hundreds does the number 729 fall between (700 and 800).
Step 3: We cannot forget about our thousands value. When rounding to the nearest hundreds this stays the same, unless our hundreds value is 9 then our thousands value may change. Since our thousands stays the same, we know the numbers on both ends of our number line begin with that digit. We then add the two hundreds we identified in step 2 (3700-------------------3800 are on both ends of our number line)
Step 4: Identify the midpoint on this number line to help us see which side our number falls on (midpoint= 750).
Step 5: Plot our number on the number line-- whichever side it falls it means that is what we round it to (either 3700 if we round down or 3800 if we round up)

** The most challenging part I've noticed is when we have to round to a place value that is smaller than the amount of digits in the number (ex. rounding a 4-digit number to the nearest ten). Underlining the place value we have to round to makes it easier to remember that the digits that come before that should not change.
Also, we discussed how many zeros we should have at the end of our number based on the place value we are rounding to:
  • nearest thousand should have three zeros __000
  • nearest hundred should end with two zeros __00
  • nearest ten should end with one zero __0
In class we worked on questions from the textbook. For homework we are to complete the rounding worksheet in our duo tangs.

Homework:
  • Math: rounding worksheet
  • Spelling: Lesson one due tomorrow-- we will be taking this up together. Spelling test Friday
  • Novel Study: Winter Days and Winter Nights (chapter 2) worksheet. Also to complete any other unfinished work from Chapter 1
  • Reading: Read 25 minutes and record this in your reading log. Parents don't forget to sign this along with signing your child's agenda so I know you're aware of what is for homework.
** BBQ forms due Friday!!

Please remember to take pictures of your child reading and send them to me so we can add them to our reading board!!
