Inquiry into Language-- Novel Study:
We began our morning by completing our Daily Language Skills then went on to read Chapter 3 of our novel study. As we read we discussed new vocabulary that we came across, along with the events that took place. As we read we tried to visualize what was happening in the story by closing our eyes to create such movies in our minds. We love listening to the stories Pa tells Laura and Mary at the end of the night. The book does a great job at encouraging us to think critically about the information we learn in our UOI and how this information is represented in our novel.

Inquiry into Math:
In math class we briefly reviewed how we can round without having to use a number line. After this review we began to learn about how we compare and order numbers. To compare numbers we use the symbols <, >, and =. To help us remember which way to draw our greater than and less than symbols we think of this as an alligator. The alligator always wants to eat more food and therefore it's mouth will be open towards the bigger number (ex. 290 > 120). Along with this came comparing numbers with a place value chart to help us see which numbers are bigger. To do so we need to look at the our biggest place value to see which digit is the largest. We know that the largest digit in this place value means that this number is our greatest number. The smallest digit in this place value will be our least number. If there is a tie we know to move on to the next place value and do the same thing with the digits in this column.

We did some examples together on the board then we completed a worksheet in class. Once this worksheet was completed we partnered up and got to play a comparing number game. We had to pick a piece of paper out of the bag, which contained digits 0-9, and the write this digit on one of our four place __ __ __ __ to make the biggest four digit number we could make. It was great to see us placing our lowest digits at the end of our numbers and trying to place our higher digits at the beginning so that we could have the bigger number. We then had to compare and order the numbers we made.

Inquiry into Language:
Today we began to work on our reading survey that is part of our DRAs. Starting tomorrow we will begin DRAs. I am working on putting together our classroom library that has books at all of our reading levels. Our independent reading time will consist of reading a book that is "just right"-- not too easy and not too hard. Once we finished our reading survey we continued to work on the comprehension activities from our novel study.

Unit of Inquiry:
We took turns reading about the inside of pioneer homes during our last period of the day and watched a video to see what a real home looked like back then. We were amazed at how small the houses could be, yet so many people lived in it. In addition to this we discussed our thoughts and feelings after gaining more insight of the conditions the Pioneers lived through. A couple of the words that came up were guilty, appreciative and sad. I'm happy to see how reflective we are about our actions and how they differ from those in the 1800s. To close off this activity we began to complete a fill in the blanks about this article in partners. This was a little challenging for all of us as the sentences were not word-for-word from the text, but instead required us to read through the information again and rephrase the information we were provided with. We will pick up with this tomorrow.

AGENDA:
- Read for 25 minutes and record in reading log
- Spelling Test tomorrow
- Math: Ordering Numbers worksheet (front and back)
- Novel Study Chapter 3 questions and syllable worksheets
