Inquiry into Language:
As we will continue to do Daily, we started our day with our quick Daily Language Skills activity and took this up together. This led us into completing Chapter 1 of our Novel Study. The comprehension activities that are to be completed for this chapter are adding detail to the inside and the outside of Laura's house based on the descriptions in the chapter. In addition to this we are to complete the Chapter 1 questions which revolve around what the book is called, who the author and illustrator are, the setting, and some brief information about what they've learned about Pioneers and the characters from this chapter. We had some class time to work on this, and if it did not get completed it is for homework. Students are to bring the novel back to school everyday if they are bringing it home to help them complete their work

Inquiry into Math:
Prior to beginning our rounding lesson we worked on an activity in partners where we had to identify what the number was based on the clues provided. Each group had to represent their number in two of the five ways we learned yesterday, then present their work to the class. Each group worked well together and took turns sharing their answers.
One of the reasons we use rounding is to help us estimate. We worked on rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 using a number line. We began by looking at what it means when we round to the nearest 10 by identifying the two tens our number falls between. (Ex. the number 37 falls between 30 and 40). Once we identified this we placed these numbers (our opening number & our closing number) on the number line. Then we had to figure out what the middle number was between these two numbers (35). Once we saw this we inputted our number 37 on the number line and determined which ten it was closer to (it's closer to 40). To help us with this each of us has the rounding rollercoaster in our duo tangs.
We did this for rounding to the nearest 100 and 1000 as well. It's important to remember that we do not forget about the other place values when we are rounding. For example, if we are rounding a 3 digit number (267) to the nearest ten, we cannot forget about the 2 and say that our opening number is 60 and our closing number is 70. We have to remember that that digit does not change, and therefore gives us an opening number of 260 and a closing number of 270. Once we get here, we can determine which end of our number line 267 is closer to (270).
We began our rounding worksheets in class and if this was not finished then we have to complete them for homework. A big focus with word problems is ensuring that we complete our word problems with a word sentence.
Note: ensure that we understand we have to identify the 10/100 or 1000 that is right before our given number and right after our number prior to determining what it would round up to.
It's very important that we read and remember what we are ROUNDING to. During class some of us forgot that we had to round to the nearest 10 and began rounding to the nearest 100. We need to ensure we read the instructions at the top of our page. Highlighting this helped us remember what we were rounding to.
Language Continued:
We continued to work on our summer paragraphs. This was the last work period we had to complete our paragraph of at least 7-9 sentences. Once we completed our paragraph we were to work on any unfinished work from the day.

Unit of Inquiry:
Lastly we worked on reading an article about Clearing The Land together. As a class we went through the comprehension questions we would have to answer so that we knew what kind of information we were looking for while we were reading. We took turns reading this article, and when we came across information that we knew were addressed in the questions, students put their hands up so we could discuss what it was they heard. Once we knew what was important we took our highlighters and highlighted these sentences. This helped us for when we went back to our desks to answer our comprehension questions.
