We started today with our first spelling Lesson. The spelling lesson work will be due on Thursday, with a spelling test taking place on Friday. The spelling lists are listed below. If your child has a level C Spelling book their spelling test will consist of 15 words. If your child has the level D Spelling book their spelling test will consist of 20 words. The lists are posted below, along with in your child's spelling book.
Level C (above)
Level D (above)
We then went on to complete our Daily Language Skills. This is a quick 5 minute warm up activity that deals with spelling, grammar, punctuation and more. The students really enjoyed this! We took these up together after French class.
French:
Visit Mme. Stella's blog to see what we did in French
Inquiry into Language Arts continued:
After French we began our first Novel Study of the Year-- Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We will be reading this novel in class, with comprehension questions to follow. If the comprehension work is not completed in class we will have it for homework. Today there were no comprehension questions as we will continue reading Chapter 1 tomorrow. Everyone received a copy of this book and followed along as myself and some other students read aloud. We had a good discussion about the different ways of living experienced back then.
Cursive writing: Each night we will have 1-2 pages of cursive writing to work on. Students understand that if they complete any other work in class then this is their time to work on potential homework so that they do not have to bring it home. Tonight we have the first page where they are to practice writing their name in cursive, along with the back of that page (page 4).
Recess/Lunch-- today we had indoor recesses due to the weather
Inquiry into Math:
In todays math class we looked at the different ways we can represent numbers: using words, place value, standard form, expanded form and base ten name. We discussed what each of these representations consists of and went over some examples together. I would give students a number and they had to go up to the whiteboard and write it in the representation that I asked them to. They all did very well. Once the student completed their representation the class reflected on whether it was correct or if something needed to be adjusted. They were all very helpful and considerate of others efforts if their were any corrections that needed to be made. All students were appreciated for their efforts and willingness to come up and try
Notes:
- Word form: this is basically how you say the number -- put it into words
- Base Ten name: this is identifying how many Thousands, Hundred, Tens, and Ones you have. If you do not have a value for any of the place values, you do not write "0 __".
- If you notice your child is having trouble writing the Expanded form, have them complete the Place Value Chart, which will help them see how many of each place value they have, then we talked about skip counting by this place value that many times. Ex. If you have 4 thousands, you skip count by 1000 four times which = 4000 +...
The math sheets that were for homework have red stars on the top. Some of us finished this in class and therefore may not have brought math homework home.
Recess/Lunch
Unit of Inquiry:
Today's UOI consisted of joining Ms. Chiappetta's class to discuss the First Settlers journey to North America, and discussed how modes of transportation have changed through a read aloud. We used a globe to show them the distance they had to travel from Spain, France, England on a boat. Some of us made some great connections to this information.
Gym:
Take a look at Ms. Yustin's blog to see what we did in health class today.
Don't forget to read for 25 minutes each night to build up those reading stickers!!!
Here is our All About Me board that is displayed outside our class :)
