Day 1! Let the Adventure begin!

Good morning to all my lovely Grade 3s!
I wish we could all be together in our class today, however given the circumstances going on around the world, I hope you are all safe and healthy at home, enjoying time with your family! I look forward to learning alongside you as we take this journey to learn together online! I am so excited to see what we can accomplish!

I have created an Instagram account for you all to follow. I will be posting videos and photos daily displaying some of your work, along with activities to be done. I would also love to see the learning you are doing at home so parents, if you can, please capture some videos and photos of your child engaging in their daily activities.

Below is a picture of the work that is assigned for today.

Inquiry into Language
As we always start off our weeks with a lesson from our Spelling workbooks, you will be working on Lesson 25 in your workbook, which unfortunately you do not have at home. The worksheet pages are below and have been sent to your parents email.

This week focuses on SUFFIXES! What are those, right?
Suffixes are groups of letters that are added to the end of a word to change its meaning. For example: -ed, -ing, -ful, -est, -s. Those are just a few of the suffixes you will be exploring over the next couple weeks.
Like I always remind you in class, make sure you read the "tip" of the week. It tells you important information about rules that exist when we use suffixes. We will be chatting about this rule later to hear your understanding of it. 😊

PAUSE AND THINK!!
What happens to the work "jump" when you add "ed" to the end? It changes to "jumped" which means you are talking about an action that happened in the past. This changes the way you use the word.
Example:
I can't say "I jump into the pool yesterday."
I would have to change "jump" into "jumped" in order for that sentence to make sense.
"I jumped into the pool yesterday." Now that sounds better!👏👏

Unit of Inquiry
Today we will begin our new unit called "My Garden"! Throughout this unit, you will learn all about plants and soil, and their importance to life on Earth. Keep reading to learn what our central idea and lines of inquiry are in this unit.
Central Idea:
Humans are responsible to care for plants and soil as they are essential for life on Earth.

Lines of Inquiry:
- Characteristics of plants and soils
- Growth in plants and formation of soils
- Protecting plant and soil habitats

Key Concepts:
We will be exploring the form of plants and soil by looking at the different parts and components in both. We will look at how plants and soil change over time due to growth and development in society. Lastly, we will talk about why it is our responsibility to protect plant and soil habitats and how this impacts the lives of humans and animals.

Today, you will begin with a read aloud called Jump into Science: Dirtwritten by Steve Tomecek. Before you begin to listen to this read aloud, I would like for you to think about what you already know about plants and soil, along with any wonders you have about plants, soil and our lines of inquiry. Record these down on a sheet of paper if you do not have the handout that was provided below and in the email. Once you finish listening to the read aloud, use a different coloured pencil crayon, marker or pen to jot down (write out) any more wonders you have since you've now learned a little more about SOIL!
Fill in some of your wonders in the bubbles above, but also use the space below to write out more wonders you have throughout this unit.

I would like for you to create a cover page for this unit! You can use the sheet provided above, or create your own on a blank sheet of paper. It should have the title "Plants and Soil Unit", then use markers and pencil crayons to draw and colour pictures that relate to plants and soil. I look forward to seeing all of your creativity on this title page!

Inquiry into Math
As you all know, this is my favourite time of the day, and some of yours too!
Before we dive right in, we are going to watch two videos that review some of the Probability vocabulary we learned before we went for March Break. After completing these videos, you have a worksheet to complete where you have to make your own marble jar to match the probability that is presented.
You will need a pencil and pencil crayons to complete this activity.

Probability: Determining Chance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMiAbQ5yUDA

When watching this video, pause it to think about the information you learned about to better understand what is being explained. When the video asks you for the probability of an event (ex. the probability of rolling an even number) pause the video to see if you can solve it before it shows you the answer.

After watching this video, lets see if you can explain some of the vocabulary that was presented. If you're still unsure, watch the second video as he talks about it a little more, then answer the questions on a lined sheet of paper.
On a lined sheet of paper, I would like for you to explain:

1) When using a fraction to represent the probability of an event, what does the NUMERATOR represent? (remember, numerator is the top number of the fraction)

2) When using a fraction to represent the probability of an event, what does the DENOMINATOR represent? (remember, denominator is the bottom number of the fraction)

** Remember how we always talk about organization of our work and its importance. Well, don't forget to write the date, title and numbers on your paper like I showed you below.

Math Antics- Basic Probability: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzfWUEJjG18
Reflection questions:
One the same lined paper from above, answer these questions:
1. Why is there a 50% chance of landing on heads and a 50% chance of landing on tails when you flip a coin?
2. Why does the probability of each outcome add up to 1 when you add the probability of all possible outcomes together? (ex. when looking at a coin, when you add the probability of getting heads = 1/2 + the probability of getting tails = 1/2 this equals 1)
1/2 + 1/2 = 2/2 = 1

If you have some dice or coins at home, have some fun and try to conduct some trials to see what your results of each outcome will be like the guy did in the video.

PE with Ms. V!
1.     Watch this YouTube video about the Benefits of Exercise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpcHLZhkm7U

Ms. V’s Teacher Talk: After watching that YouTube video, I hope you remember some of the conversations we have had about being physically active and the importance of exercise. Exercise is extremely important for creating a healthy body and a healthy lifestyle. While you are at home, it is important that you are active throughout all parts of your day to help you strengthen your muscles, fight illnesses and help you regain focus to complete more homework and learning tasks.

2.     Follow along with this exercise video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhCM0C6GnrY

Ms. V’s Feedback: Great job! How are you feeling? A little sweaty? Tired? Thirsty? Can you feel how fast your heart is beating? Those are your heart muscles working and becoming stronger to make sure the rest of your body is healthy too. Please make sure you drink lots of water throughout the day, especially after this workout and continue to be active throughout the rest of your day! J
French with Mme. Rawan
https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com
Monday, March 23rd, 2020

Learning goal: Brainstorm, use previous knowledge and make connections to build a new set of vocabulary words.
Success criteria: I can think about words relating to a new concept using previous knowledge and make connections.

-We are starting our new unit about gardening and nature(le jardinage et la nature).

-Students will have to prepare a sheet of paper with:
·      The date in French (they should be able to write in French independently: Lundi 23 mars 2020).
·      The students write down the title as usually done in class:
Le jardinage et la nature.
·      The students should brainstorm using a bubble mind map (as usually done in class). Some hints for the brainstorm: what word does “jardinage” sound like? (“le jardin” – the garden), who does the gardening? What tools do we use? Verbs? Adjectives? Which parts of nature are related to gardening?
·      As an extension, students can circle the words in the brainstorm that are nouns and underline the verbs and use a different colour to circle the adjectives.
-Students compare their brainstorm and the words they found to the example provided by the teacher (attached photo) and complete their brainstorm mind map accordingly.

-Students should go over their mind map a couple of times to make sure they can pronounce the words and remember their meaning.

Note: Keep your work in a folder where you can save all of your written work on lined paper and worksheets to bring it all back to school with you.

Music with Mrs. McMillan
www.mrsmcmillanmusic.blogspot.com

Welcome back to music class!  I hope you had a wonderful March break!  Later in the week I will be posting a video where you can sing vocal warm ups with me and favorite songs just like we do in music class but in your own home.  It will be fun!  Today for music class I would love for you to warm up your singing voices by composing your own vocal warm up like we do in class (such as "It is Monday" to do mi so do so mi do).  Then practice singing one of your favorite songs from music class such as "The Elevator Song."  After you have done that please compose your own song or parody (a song with lyrics that you make up set to a familiar tune like "twinkle twinkle").  The song should be about how important it is to stay home right now and why.  An example of a song three brothers composed can be found  by googling "Ladner brothers stay home."  Please write your song lyrics on paper.  You are welcome to email me the lyrics at amcmillan@stjudesacademy.com. When you are finished you can perform your song for your family!  Feel free to send me a video! When you are finished you can have fun composing songs online on the song maker website which is https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/
1.Compose your own vocal warm up.
2. Sing one of your favourite songs from music class.
3.Compose your own song or parody about the importance of staying home right now.
4.Compose songs on Song Maker

In the video below, you will see an example of a song that was written about staying at home.

Agenda
All homework sheets have been posted above and attached in the email I sent out this morning. For those who asked for a package to be delivered, it will be delivered tomorrow at some point, so your child can complete today's UOI and Math on a separate piece of paper today, or wait until tomorrow's package arrives. As for Spelling, they have all week to complete this weeks lesson.
- UOI: Wonders about our new unit & Title page
- Language: Spelling Lesson 25
- Math: Probability words and Fraction worksheet

Stay tuned to hear more about how we will communicate with each other online so I can see all of your happy faces again, and so you can chat with some of your friends. 😊😊 I can't wait to see you all!
Also, don't be afraid to leave a comment letting me know how everything is going in the comment section of each blog!
