Students completed their Lesson 17 spelling test. These were sent home today for parents to sign.
After this, students began to work on their "Plot Graphic Organizer" for their speeches. They reread their story to remind them of the stories problem and solution, along with how the story began and ended. The last part they had to work on was the main events that happened throughout the story--everything else. They will continue to work on these organizers tomorrow.
Unit of Inquiry
Students were given their Summative Graphic organizers. We went through each component together so students knew what the expectation were for each section. They were so excited to learn who was in their groups, along with what their stance is on the topic we have come up with.
The topic is: St. Jude's Corporation has the opportunity to develop a community in an open fertile area of land. Should they develop it into an urban community?
Students are divided into groups of 3, where they have to brainstorm reasons to support their stance. Either they agree that it should be developed into an urban community, or they believe that it shouldn't. I selected their groups and stances to challenge them to think and make connections beyond what they already know.
As the end of the day, students had time to brainstorm their 5 reasons, then figure out which were their 3 strongest reasons. I've met with some of the students to review the top 3 reasons they selected and brainstormed some ideas for them to research when they get to the research stage.
Tomorrow the students will get to break into their groups to develop counterarguments: arguments they think their opponent will come up with. Using their counterarguments, students will brainstorm rebuttals they will use to counteract their opponent's argument.
Inquiry into Math
We continued with elapsed time today. As a class, we went through three example: two focusing on solving the amount of time that passed when given the start and end time of an activity, and one focusing on solving the end time of an activity. We really focused on using the problem solving breakdown that we used a couple units back. We spent time talking about the importance of:
- Understanding the information that is provided,
- Understanding what the problem is asking you to solve,
- Understanding how to approach solving that problem and
- Understanding what your answer/steps represent.
To complete these problems, first we:
- Identified the information we know by circling it in the problem
- Identified what it is asking me to solve by underlining it
- Identified the steps we would have to complete to solve each problem
Before beginning to apply the steps we identified, we rewrote everything we know from the problem and what we want to know to emphasize our understanding of the problem.
Lastly, when writing our word sentence, we need to remember to reflect on whether the questions asks us to solve:
- The amount of time that has passed (expressed as: "__ hours and ___ minutes)
or
- The start/end time (expressed as a digital clock "___:___")
Some students wanted to get a start on their homework so brought their math homework to the cafeteria to work on during lunch!
Agenda
- Read for 25 minutes
- Elapsed Time Word Problems Worksheet
- Novel Study: Read Chapter 4 & complete comprehension questions
- Re-registration forms due Feb. 18th
