International Day
We began to work on summarizing our topics about Greece for our International Day board. We worked really hard on our summarizes and cooperated well with our partners. It was great to see the team work happening! Tomorrow we will assemble our board and prepare how we are going to present it.
Inquiry into Language
This week our lesson is a review of some of the words we previously worked on. I have selected 20 words for students to write a sentence with. Their sentences must have 8 or more words. I encouraged students to use the glossary in the back of their Spelling Workbooks if they are having troubling forming a sentence for a word, or if they don't know the meaning of the word. Spelling is due on Friday this week. I will be looking for capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, punctuation at the end, correct tense of the word (ex. if the word is climb, they need to use "climb" in the sentences, not climbing, climber, etc.), and that the sentence makes sense.
Inquiry into Math
Our learning goal today was to be able to estimate the product of a multiplication sentence involving a two-by-one fact (ex. 46 x 3). We reviewed how to estimate a product-- by using ROUNDING. As a class, we discussed why it is important to round our 2-digit or 3-digit numbers, instead of our single digit number: because it could round down to zero, which would not give us an accurate estimate for our product. As you can see from the examples, first we wrote the question vertically, ensuring we lined up our digits in their correct place value. Then we multiplied each digit from the top number by the single number on the bottom. We also did an example of a word problem together. After we had thought that we solved the word problem I told the students that "when I come to work, I also have to drive home" and a ton of light bulbs started to go off. I loved hearing their thinking of how to solve this problem. It was important to realize that there are multiple ways we could have solved this problem.
