Day 2

Announcements
Student-led conferences are Thursday. Please ensure that you schedule a time slot through "pickatime" if you would like to meet with me.

We will be having our in-class spelling bee competition next week to determine who will compete in this years spelling bee. Students should be practicing the words that were sent home before the march break. The Spelling Bee date has changed to Monday, April 8th.

Unit of Inquiry
We completed our Soil Experiment today. We went outside to dig up some soil for our experiment. Each student had an opportunity to participate in some form of the experiment. This experiment allowed us to see what happens when you add water to soil, allowing us to see the different types of soil: sand, silt and clay. We recorded our observations in our notebooks by drawing a picture of what we see, along with a written description of what happened. We will complete the final step tomorrow.

Inquiry into Language
This morning we listened to a read aloud of the story "Liam Takes A Stand." As a class, we summarized this story by discussing the important events that took place. Students then began to work on writing their own summary of this story. We also had some silent reading time this morning.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math
We further explored Quadrilaterals today. Students copied down the attributes of the different types of quadrilaterals in their notebooks.
As a class we went on to draw an example or examples of each quadrilateral listed above. This was interesting as it allowed us to see how some shapes can be classified as more than one quadrilateral. For example, a square can be classified as a rectangle, parallelogram and rhombus. We worked on justifying how one shape can be classified as another quadrilateral using the attributes listed in the chart above. We also looked at how we can identify different angles within a quadrilateral and how to use appropriate symbols to represent equal sides, equal angles and parallel lines.
Students worked in their groups, organizing the shapes provided into a Venn Diagram based on the attributes provided. They then had to brainstorm two different attributes to use to sort the shapes.

Unit of Inquiry Continued
Students began to work on Soil Profile art to show the different layers in soil and what each of those layers consist of. From the top to the bottom we have: organic matter, top soil, sub soil, parent material and bedrock. We will continue to work on these tomorrow.
