Reading Buddies
This morning we had reading buddies with Mr. Foster's Grade 1 class.

French
Check out Mme. Stella's blog to see what they've been working on: https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com
Today students had double french. They continued in the

Unit of Inquiry
We began our fourth Unit of Inquiry. This unit is called Urban vs. Rural. Today we watched a video that emphasized the difference between Urban, Rural and Suburban areas. After the video we completed an "H-chart" to organize the characteristics of these communities where they belong. Each student had their own set of characteristics to sort, which they then taped to the according area on the chart.

Inquiry into Math
We reviewed some of the concepts from yesterdays homework based on "quarter-to" and "quarter-after" using our class set of whiteboards. Then we went in to todays lesson which revolved around estimating time. This refers to providing a reasonable guess for how long it takes to do something. When estimating, remember that we are rounding-- this gives us an approximate duration of time.
We discussed that since we will be rounding, our estimates should end with a multiple of 5 (using our benchmarks of 5 minute intervals around the clock). Each student provided me with an example of an estimated time, and a time that would not be considered an estimate since it did not end with a multiple of 5 (ex. 8:23 or 2:19, etc.).

Estimating time allows students to predict approximately how long it would take for you to do something. I provided students with some scenarios and 2 options to choose from in regards to how long that scenario should take them. On their white boards they wrote down the most reasonable guess out of the two options. They did very well on this activity.

After this we went through some word problems together to see how we could solve the estimated time that passed or what time we would begin/end an activity. We used our problem-solving model to work through this and write down everything we know.

Points of emphasis today:
Placement of hour and minute hands
When drawing the hour hand, we need to remember where it should be in relation to the hour we are still completing and the following hour. (Ex. If it is 8:58, the hour hand should be right before the 9 since it is 2 minutes before 9:00).
If we are half past an hour, the hour hand should be between the hour we are on and the following hour.
Estimating Time
Our estimated times end in a multiple of 5. To estimate time we need to round the times provided to the nearest 5-minute interval (ex. 23 rounds up to 25 minutes, 27 rounds down to 25 minutes) ** Think of rounding without the pennies**

RECESS/ LUNCH
During recess students went to the book fair to make their purchases. We will be returning tomorrow for those who did not get an opportunity to purchase today.
