Day 1- Fun Friday

Music
Check out Mrs. McMillan's blog to see what they've been working on: www.mrsmcmillanmusic.blogspot.com

French was cancelled today since we had double French on Tuesday

Inquiry into Language
This morning we focused on the criteria they are expected to include in a summary. I read the book called "Lily and the Mixed-Up Letters". As a class we talked about what happened in the story from beginning to end. Then students watched a video about criteria in a Summary (SWBST). In a summary, students are to include.

Using the story we read, we discussed what information we knew for each of these criteria. With students providing the ideas, I organized them on the board. Next, using these jot notes, we turned this information into a summary. While doing so some of the students suggested information which brought us to the topic of "more important information" vs. "less important info". While yes, some of the events or details are mentioned in the book, we need to ask ourselves "is this information important/essential information or background info?" "If this info was missing, would that impact the story's plot?"

Reading Buddies
We had reading buddies with Ms. Gandy's class.

Inquiry into Math
Today we learned about elapsed time: the amount of time that has passed. As a class, we discussed scenarios that might require us to solve the elapsed time. We then completed an example together. We learned:
- How to solve elapsed time using a number line
- How to solve elapsed time by counting on by hours, then minutes
- How using the standard algorithm of addition/ subtraction doesn't always work (the minute digits will exceed the number 60, which is greater than the amount of minutes in an hour)
- How to be specific when answering word problems
Example of where standard algorithms will not work without having to regroup the time after.

In partners, students planned a Fun Day at the activity park provided. Students had to determine how long they wanted to spend at each activity, when they would begin that activity, when they would finish and the amount of time that passed as the events occurred throughout the day.
