Inquiry into Language
Level D: Our focus is on adding the suffixes "es", "ing", and "ed" to the end of words that end in "y" preceded by a consonant. When you are adding the suffixes "es" and "ed", you have to change the "y to an i" and then add the suffix.

Morning Welcome
Inquiry into Language
We began our day with 20 minutes of silent reading. We have selected a new novel to read which we will be working on over the next week. Once we finished silent reading time, we began to work on Lesson 16 in our Spelling books.
Level C: Our focus is on "kn" and "gn" producing the "n" sound, "wr" producing the "r" sound, "gh" and "ph" producing the "f" sound and "ch" and "ck" producing the "k" sound.Level D: Our focus is on adding the suffixes "es", "ing", and "ed" to the end of words that end in "y" preceded by a consonant. When you are adding the suffixes "es" and "ed", you have to change the "y to an i" and then add the suffix.

Inquiry into Language continued
We reviewed all of the figurative language types we have learned about this term and came up with some examples of each. We then took up questions from our personification worksheet prior to completing our Figurative Language quiz.

Inquiry into Math
We began with our "Count Up" game reviewing our 7x table then took up some examples from the homework that revolved around comparing fractions. To answer these, we referred to our fraction benchmarks of 0, 1/2 and 1 to help us solve which fractions are greater. The best way to determine which fraction is greater is to think about whether each fraction is greater than or less than 1/2. At times, it may also help us see the difference if we draw a picture to show the difference amongst the fractions. This helped clear up some misconceptions we have around fractions. Misconception: Just because one numerator is bigger than the other, that doesn't mean the fraction with the bigger numerator is greater. We also discussed how to explain how we know which fraction is greater if they both have the same numerator but different denominator and what this denominator tells us. The higher the value of the denominator, the smaller the parts of the fraction.
Today's lesson revolved around equivalent fractions. We used fraction strips to help us solve some equivalent fractions by lining up our strips to see if they lined up with the fraction we were comparing it to. In addition to this we learned how to multiply a fractions numerator and denominator by the same value to provide us with an equivalent fraction.
Unit of Inquiry
In UOI today we explored the genre Poetry. We examined two poetry rhyming schemes: ABAB and ABCB.
ABAB: This means that your first and third lines will rhyme and your second and fourth lines will rhyme.
ABCB: This means that your second and fourth lines are the only ones that rhyme.
