Tremendous Tuesday!!

Inquiry into Language:
Today we focused on how to organize the work we do in our notebooks neatly, mainly focusing on how to write information in a t-chart. We talked about what we include on our page: the date and title, along with whatever it is we are doing. We discussed what margins are used for, and how the only time we really write in them are for numbers (ie. spelling tests). When focusing on organizing information in a t-chart, I emphasized the importance of bullets to write each point. Some of us will write a new bullet point continuing from a previous one instead of starting it on a new line. We talked about how when we are writing a new bullet point, this has to go on a new line. If students weren't doing this they went back and fixed it. In addition to this we focused on ensuring what we write on one side of our t-chart does not cross that middle line-- if it did we had to go back and fix it. Neatness and organization of writing will be a big focus this year.
The topics we focused on today were what rules and routines mean. Students had to differentiate between these two, then come up with examples together to copy into our t-charts. When talking about rules, it's important that students can explain the reasoning behind a rule. They worked very well at participating in this activity and staying on task!

RECESS/ LUNCH

Inquiry into Math:
Students completed a mini pre-test for our next unit which is multiplication and division. They then began to work on completing a multiplication test. Noticing the number patters we have learned about really helps complete this chart.

Inquiry into Language continued:
We continued with our t-chart activity as we only got through rules in the morning. By the end of class students could differentiate between what a rule and routine is and come up with some good examples for both at home and at school.
Students then worked on completing their own t-charts of what their rules and routines are at home. Tomorrow they will use this t-chart to help them write a letter to myself explaining their rules and routines in detail. While writing this letter they will ensure to include all parts of a letter.

RECESS/ LUNCH

Unit of Inquiry:
We discussed how forces can manipulate both the direction and speed of and object. Together we brainstormed a list of words that describe the location and speed of something and recorded these into our t-charts. We then began to read about the following 4 forces: gravity, muscular, buoyancy and friction. Over the course of this unit students will be reflecting on whether the forces are a pulling force, pushing force, or both. Once they learn about a force they will go back to their Venn Diagrams and write which category it falls in. Today we have already discovered that Muscular forces can be both pushing and pulling forces by getting up and doing some activities and stretching. In addition to this, gravity is a pulling force, and friction and buoyancy are both pushing forces. Now we will began to further explore these forces!
