Inquiry into Language/ Reading Buddies:
After we learned about the different components of a letter yesterday, we began to write a letter together to a student who was supposed to come to our school. All of the students contributed great ideas to this letter and took part in writing their own ideas down. We began by ensuring we have the date, then salutation followed by a comma, and finally began to write our body.
We had fun reading to Ms. Gandy's Grade 1 class today. We are working on not only reading the books to our reading buddies, but also asking them questions about the book such as "what happened in the book" "what was your favourite part of the book and why?"etc.

Inquiry into Math:
We took up some of our math questions together. Great job to everyone who organized their information in a chart to help them identify the pattern. We also did a good job at identifying that when a question asks for the total of something, that we need to add everything together. It was interesting to see how we had different answers for some questions, which allowed us to explore how we can solve this problem together and identify what the correct answer was. We are really focusing on ensuring we use a word sentence to answer our questions.

We then moved on to looking at equations. We did a quick elbow-partner discussion and share on what an equation is and why the number sentence 9 + 2 = 11 is an equation. Equations are number sentences that show how two things are equal.
We then discussed whether 9 + 2 = 8 + 3 is an equation or not. It was interesting to see the variety of answers and explanations. As we now know, this is and equation because the number sentence on the right side is equal to the number sentence on the left side. We looked at how we knew this by identifying the sum of each of these number sentences.

To add to this we looked at how we can identify all of the addition facts that make a sum of 11. To do so we started with our smallest value 0 and identified what we had to add to this number to equal 11, which is 11. As you can see in the image below, there are 12 addition facts for a sum of 11. To ensure we identify all of the addition facts we work from smallest value to largest value. As you can see in the imagine, as our first number in the number sentence increases, our second number decreases.

Lastly, we looked at how to solve the missing value in an equation.
Ex. 8 + ___ = 15
To solve this we have to work backwards: Subtract 15 - 8 = 7.
Your missing value is 7. Therefore, 8 + 7 = 15.

Inquiry into Language continued:
We continued to add details to our letter. We will complete this letter on Monday and then look at how we would edit this letter.

Unit of Inquiry:
We continued, and almost completed our summative tasks. Most of us have completed our summative and began to practice how we will present it to the class. If we felt we are prepared for our presentations on Monday then we silent read our reading level book.
