First Day of Grade 3 !

We had such a great first day today! Mr. Flowers began the day by teaching Music to our class, and then Mme. Stella taught them French. After French we spent some time playing a True and False game about myself so that the students could get to know a little about me. Through this the students also shared some information about themselves. We then went on to setting the expectations of our class by creating a chart of what a great classroom looks like, sounds like and feels like. The students came up with some great characteristics of what our classroom should look like by closing their eyes and imagining what they would see, hear and feel in a great classroom. Once we came up with all the ideas they could think of, each student had to select one characteristic from each section that means the most to them. I will use these characteristics to create a class contract that the students are to follow throughout the year. I loved seeing how involved everyone was in contributing to our ideas of what a great classroom looks like!

As part of getting to know some information about my students, they began to create an “All About Me” poster that will be posted on our classroom bulletin board in the hallway. A picture of our bulletin board will be posted shortly after their posters are complete.

After lunch the students began to explore their first UOI. We created a class KWL chart where they had to express as much as they know about the “Early Settlers”. At first, majority of my students had more questions than information. After completing this first part, we watched a video about the Early Settlers, which introduced them to the topics they will be learning more about. After this video my students were already able to express more information about the Early Settlers. To express these thoughts they wrote them on a different colour sticky-note and placed them under the “Know” part of our KWL. Once we learn more information about these topics they will add that to the “Learned” part of the KWL chart. They’ve come up with some phenomenal questions about “Pioneers” that were answered in the video and will be further addressed in our unit. Along with Ms. Chiapetta’s class, all of the Grade 3s completed a scavenger hunt around the school to find the answers to the questions they were provided with. As they walked around looking for the answers some students told me they already knew the answers before they even got to that question because it talked about that in the video. We took the scavenger hunt up as a class by having each group rotate their papers around to have their peers mark them.  Once this was finished they continued to work on their All About Me posters up until recess.

At the end of the day we had our very first house game take place in the Gym. All students were super engaged and cheering for their teams to win! House games will continue to occur everyday this week! Don’t forget, Spirit Day is this FRIDAY!!!!! Make sure to wear your house colours—Green, Orange and Blue!!
