Inquiry into Language
We began our novel study today!!! Our novel study is called "Little House in the Big Woods." Before we started to read the book, we completed a "before reading" worksheet which reflected on the author of the book, along with what we think this book is going to be about based on the back description and front cover. Once we all completed this, as a class we started to read our novel study. Some students took part in the readings by reading the story aloud.

Unit of Inquiry
Students continued to work on their sail boats based on Patrick's journal. We are working on developing our fine motor skills so that we are able to cut along the dotted lines provided to ensure we present visually appealing work pieces.

Inquiry into Math
Our focus today was on ROUNDING. In Grade 3, students are expected to be able to round a number to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand. We went over and completed some examples together to show the steps that are required when rounding a number. We looked at how to determine whether we round up or down by using a number line to help us see the two numbers our number falls between.
Examples we did together to help clarify our understanding.
When rounding to the nearest hundred, you can identify whether we round up or down by looking solely at the digit in the tens column (if it's 5 or greater, round up and if it's 4 or less round down), or by looking at the digits in the tens and ones column (if it's 50 or greater, round up to the next hundred and if it's 49 or less, round down).

Some key points to remember:
- When rounding to the nearest ten, our number should always end with a zero
- When rounding to the nearest hundred, our number should always end with two zeros
- When rounding to the nearest thousand, our number should always end with three zeros.
- When rounding, the digit in the place value we are rounding either stays the same (if we round down) or increases by 1 (if we are rounding up).Every digit after the digit we rounded changes to zero.
We will continue with rounding tomorrow when we work on some word problems! There was no math homework tonight!
