Terry Fox Run
We had our Terry Fox run today! All houses did a terrific job at bringing in house points for their house by completing laps around the turf field.
Inquiry into Language
We continued to read our novel study today, complete Chapter 2. After we finished this chapter, we orally summarized the chapter as a class. During this time, we identified the difference between more important and less important information in a text. We will be working on how to create well written summaries this year, and determining what is important to include vs. less important is important for the students to know how to do. Once we finished summarizing this chapter, students worked on their Chapters 1 & 2 comprehension worksheets.
** Part of their homework requires them to use a dictionary. How to use a dictionary is also something we will be focusing on this year. If your child finds this part challenging to do, they may use the internet to help them find the definitions of the words. Once we learn how to use a dictionary, students will be required to use a dictionary to locate the meaning of such words.
We also completed our Lesson 1 spelling tests today. For our spelling tests, I select 10 words for the students to spell, then they have to spell these words correctly and use them in a sentence that makes sense. Our sentences need to have at least 6 words, along with correct punctuation and capitalization. We are learning how to organize our notebooks, such as: where the title & date go, along with where numbers belong. This is the expectation of students when they write in their spelling, language or math notebooks.
Inquiry into Math
Today's lesson was all about Ordering and Comparing numbers. As a class we discussed what it means to "compare" numbers. When comparing numbers, we use the greater than, less than and equal to signs (< , =, >). To determine which sign to use when comparing numbers, we agreed to first identify which number is the larger one, then to determine which symbol we use, the opening of the symbol always faces the larger number because "the alligator wants to eat the bigger item."
Then we looked at ordering numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. It is so important that we read what a question asks us to do to determine if we have to go from biggest to smallest number, or smallest to greatest. To help us order and compare numbers, we used a place value chart. This chart allows use to compare the digits in each column to help us determine which number is bigger.
For examples, if we want the greatest number, we need to look at our greatest place value, which would be hundred in the image above, and look for the highest value. Since we have two 4s which are the highest, we then have to look at the tens column. Since one of the numbers is 2 and the other is 6, we know that the number 463 is larger than 427 because it has more tens. We continue to look at the rest of the numbers in our place value chart to order them from greatest to least.
Above is an example which was part of their homework questions (#1). We went through this together to demonstrate different ways of showing our work and how to solve the problem.
In addition to this, we looked at how to create a specific number out of a set of digits.
Ex: Make three four-digit numbers out of the digits 2, 8, 1, 5
My three numbers could be a variety of numbers such as: 2815, 5182, 8215, etc.
With this we talked about how we would make the GREATEST & SMALLEST number out of these digits. To create our greatest number, we have to start with our highest digit and work our way down to the lowest (8521). To create our smallest, we have to start with our lowest digit and work our way to the highest (1258).
The students worked very well either on their own or in small groups. It's great to see them helping each other by explaining a concept their peers may not understand! 👏
