Inquiry into Language:
We began our day together by creating our daily language skills. We are timed to see how long it takes us to complete these questions everyday to see if we are improving. Today we decides to clap for everyone as their time was announced. I loved seeing this encouragement from each other.
We began Lesson 2 of our Spelling. Spelling will be due on Thursday, with our spelling test to follow on Friday.

Inquiry into Math:
We began to learn how to make friendly numbers to help us with our mental math. We were introduced to this concept, shown some examples of how to approach them, then completed several examples together. As students demonstrated an understanding of the concept they went off to complete a worksheet while I continued to go through more examples with students who needed a little more demonstration.
Step 1: Figure out which number is closest to a multiple of 100
245 + 672
Step 2: Show how this number is a multiple of 100
672 is 700 - 28
Step 3: Add the addend that is not your friendly number, to the multiple of 100 you created in step 2
245 + 700 = 945
Step 4: Take your answer from step 3 and add/subtract the remaining amount that makes up your friendly number from step 2
945 - 28 = 917
*** We have to be sure that when we show which multiple of 100 it is closest to that we remember our rounding rules as to if we should round up vs. round down (ex. 672 would not be 600 + 72, it would be 700 - 28)
As we can sometimes get confused when we have mental math activities for homework, students homework is to teach mom and dad how to solve a math question by creating friendly numbers. (The example above will also help incase we forget). We will discuss these experiences tomorrow and learn a new mental math addition strategy.

Novel Study/ UOI:
We continued to work on our novel study worksheets about actions and consequences. We also began to work on our log cabins for our Pioneer unit. We are using pretzels and milk cartons to build our log cabins. Tomorrow we will continue with this and began to decorate around our log cabin.
