Today was our trip to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington. The students had so much fun exploring nature and a variety of plants. We started the day off with a picnic at a part near St. Jude's. Once we got to the Botanical Gardens, we went on a hike through the forest, feed birds and planted our own sunflowers.

Our Field Trip is tomorrow. Please ensure all students bring a lunch with them as we will not be eating at the school. Students are to dress in their gym uniforms as they will complete activities involving soil.

JK- Grade 2 Arts Night
Today was a busy day! This morning we completed an Art activity along with some silent reading. While students were silent reading, some of the students completed their DRA.

In the afternoon we went to watch the JKs- Grade 2s perform their songs for Arts Night. They did a fantastic job. I am so proud of you!

Inquiry into Language

This morning students began to work on their Spelling Lesson 30. This week is a review week of the words from the past 5 lessons.

Novel Study
We continued to read our novel study and I cannot believe we are almost done. The students are loving this book and I love hearing how they are reading with more expression.

Inquiry into Math
Today was a review day since our test is on Friday. We went through the questions together then students began to work independently on their work. Students will receive a review package tomorrow that is due Thursday.

I love witnessing moments like this where the students are teaching each other!

Unit of Inquiry
We began our final unit of inquiry today: MEDIA! We began with a silent marker walk to share our thoughts on what media is, how it is used and how it affects us. After this students had some time to explore media on the chromebooks to get a better idea of what media consists of. I witnessed some phenomenal teamwork while the students were browsing the internet.

RECESS/ LUNCH

UOI continued/ Gym
Everyone completed their own media bubble of what they learned about media from their peers and the information they found and looked at on the internet. After working on this for a period of time, students participated in some GoNoodle exercises since our Gym class was cancelled.

Inquiry into Language

This morning we continued with our My Secret Garden novel study. Students continued to read as a class then worked on their novel study questions independently.

Unit of Inquiry

Students worked on their learner profile reflections for our Plants summative. Once they finished this it was a work period to finish up their novel study comprehension questions.

Inquiry into Math

Today was a review of all the transformations. Students completed a transformation quiz then worked on a worksheet where they had to draw reflections, translations and rotations of a variety of shapes. This week I have been conferencing with students on the work they had to go back and correct to ensure they are understanding the concepts. Students are reminded to take responsibility for their learning by coming and asking for help if they don't fully understand a concept or if a concept is very challenging for them to complete.

Reader's Theatre

Reading buddies was cancelled today so we had an opportunity to experience readers theatre as a class. Students were broken into two groups to practice a script they were provided. Reader's Theatre focuses on reading fluency and expression. Students practice their lines in their groups, then present their script to the class. It is so important that students follow along and practice their lines to become more fluent and expressive in their reading. This also gives students the opportunity to understand the different punctuation marks in writing and what the text should sound like when these are included.

Inquiry into Math

Today we learned all about rotations. We also reviewed how to complete reflections as this can become tricky when our mirror is in a different location

Reflections:

When completing a reflection of a shape, students are encouraged to count the number of spaces from each vertex of the shape to the mirror line. For each vertex, you are to count the total number of squares you have to go through to get to the mirror line, then count that many spaces on the opposite side of the mirror to locate where that vertex of the image is going to go. You do this for all vertices from the figure.

Rotations: 

We discussed the difference between the figure vs. image when we complete transformations. The figure is the original shape we are provided with that has to be transformed (by either a reflection, rotation or translation). The image is the drawing of the shape that appears after we complete a reflection, rotation or translation. 

Key terms for rotations are: turn centre, quarter turn, half turn, three-quarter turn and full turn. Our focus for this year when rotating shapes is to rotate it from a turn centre: this is a vertex from the figure that stays the same when we rotate the figure. This vertex will never move as it is where we begin our rotation of either a quarter turn, half turn or three-quarter turn. 

When completing rotations, students are to label their turn centre, along with identify how much the figure has rotated by (1/4 turn, 1/2 turn or 3/4 turn)

This afternoon we had a rehearsal for Art's Night at the dome. Students worked on their math homework during this time when they weren't on stage.

Today was our Plants Showcase for our Sharing the Planet UOI. We practiced all morning to prepare us for the Showcase in the afternoon. The Grade 3s have worked so hard on their plants and really appreciate everyone who came to see their hard work.
